hi there,

im putting together a system and i recently purchased a samsung LN-S4095D and an Oppo DV-970HD, both of which im pretty excited about. now i need help on the sound so i figured this was the place to go...

ok so most of the home theatre systems im looking at have been in the $500 range which i am willing to spend (but not much more than that.) quite a few of these "home theatre in a box" systems seem to have DVD players included which i obviously wont need. 5.1 surround should be enough for me...i'll be watching a lot of movies but cant imagine id really need more than that. so i guess im just looking for a receiver and a set of speakers that will make DVDs, CDs and my iPod sound great for around $500.

any ideas? your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

A great sounding 5.1 HTIB for $500?

Perhaps you should lower your expectations to "not too bad". If you can live with that, get back to us.

If you don't mind investing more down the road, start with a quality stereo setup that can expand to multi-channel. Internet direct brands (AV123, Ascend, Axiom, etc.) have products which should be affordable to you while still leaving enough budget for a receiver.

For half that you could get the logitech Z5500 computer speaker system.

How big is your room? This would be better then any 500 dollar HTIB.

If you don't want that, I suggest you wait and save.

computer speaker system

well...i live in a loft which is a completely open space of about 2000 square feet with 17' ceilings and wood floors so the sound is going to bounce around like crazy. the "theatre" area is probably only about 10x10 or so with around 6-7 feet from the tv to the couch. therefore the computer speaker system sounds like an interesting idea. i dont need to be blown away, just be able to play music from time to time and watch movies. can you think of a specific system that would work sound nice and be in my price range?

thanks for all your help.

The $500 ceiling presents the problem since you'll need the speakers and a receiver. For about a grand, the new SVS speaker system looks like a bargain and then add a couple hundred for a receiver. Orb Audio also offers a complete speaker/receiver package for about the same amount. You might want to consider used equipment.....people are always upgrading in this hobby and second hand, gently used stuff is easy to find.
