Just joined up and figured I'd say hi. Not new to the audio world but not even close to an expert. Just bought a new Yamaha receiver to replace an older Onkyo TXDS939 so I'm curious how I'll like the new sound. Kept my speakers and other components in place for now as I don't see the need to upgrade just yet.

Well hope I find the site useful and look forward to meeting some new folks.

Thanks for the welcomes. Well the receiver I just purchased is a Yamaha RX-A1020. I'm hoping to get the drywall work done in my living room today and get it hooked up to see if I like it. The front speakers I have are JBL L5s. I wish they had a bit more modern look to them, but I really like their sound. For a center and surrounds I have some definitive technologies and for a sub I've got an old Infinity BU-2.

Also trying to figure out what to do with my M504 and HK2200 that have been sitting in my basement for over a year. Was thinking I might sell them on CL or something but I just can't bring myself to part with that Onkyo. I remember the day I bought that thing like it was yesterday.

Welcome:D

I have the 939. While I upgraded the preamp to decode the new audio codecs on BD movies, I still use the amp sections on them for the l/r and surround speakers. It has been a very faithful receiver over the years.

While the Yamaha is rated for less power, not by much, I would not expect it to be audibly different from the Onkyo within their design limits.
Was there anything wrong with the 939?

Nothing wrong with the Onkyo other than what you mentioned, and the fact that it did not have HDMI inputs. Like you I'm sure, I had problems with some movies where I'd have to switch to the decoder built into the bluray player and then back for other stuff (I was running an optical cable for the audio) and it just didn't seem to like the input all the time. I got tired of all that mess.

The wife gave the green light for the new television after it took a dive on me a couple weeks ago so I took the liberty of adding in a new receiver since I liked what it had to offer (HDMI inputs, HD radio, iPOD connectivity etc).

Got everything hooked up. Had a snag with the Yamaha in that when it tried to update its firmware it failed and gave me error code 2000. Did a little research, d/l the firmware to a flash drive and loaded it that way. Seems to have worked fine. Record player is working, CD player is working, directv is working. Haven't gotten to the blurays yet but that's coming.

Oh yeah and here's a funny for ya. Was playing a record and started to get what I thought was some clipping. I'm like WTF, I don't even have it up that loud. Turns out I left the top up and it was banging against the cabinet it was in on hard notes and causing the needle to skip. Go figure. Lol.

Well everything seemed to work fine last night. Played around with the stereo a little bit. Seems as though the refresh rate of the video signal is registering with the receiver as 60Hz (according to the info menu) but the TV is capable of 240 so I'll have to read up and figure why the disparity and see if there is something I need to change or if the TV just does its thing regardless of what the receiver says.

Overall I'm pleased with the sound quality of the music and the movie playback was fine. I've got some adjusting to do with some of the speakers (mostly the center) but the provided mic seemed to get me very close.

Not sure about the sub settings just yet. Receiver seemed to set it awfully low and it is off for the 2channel music. I assume that is a standard setting, I just need to make sure its working properly.

Really liked the internet radio interface. Nice to have a wide variety of music to choose from.

Didn't get a chance to stream any of my own music or test out the HD radio.
