Hello from a VERY green newb!

At 45 years of age I am just now beginning to enjoy the unparalleled sound quality that can only come from moving up to a higher plane and totally different quality of electronic componentry.

Music collection of an insane person

Thanks for the welcome and taking time to reply. This really seems like a first class forum and one that a person can ask questions, seek advice and learn without getting flame broiled. It cracks me up how some of the seasoned vets on other forums get so arrogant and try to make the newbs out to be total idiots. If only people will realize that they too were once new as well.

As for my tastes in music....hmmmmm....it ranges from one exteme to the next but I like classic rock, some classical, soundtracks such as those from Broadway productions like Phanton, Cats, etc. I especially LOVE female vocalists and think that it's pure heaven to listen to what I call raw talent. Just pure vocals that don't need a bunch of mixing, synthesizing, over dubbing, etc. My current favorite to listen to is Alison Krauss and Union Station and their DVD that was recorded from a live performance at the Palace Theater in Louisville KY is just amazing to me. There are better recordings out there but it's hard to find more talent than Alison and her amazing musicians. The best concert I ever attended was AKUS at the McCauley Theater in Louisville several years ago. It was so up close and personal and when I play that disc it's like she is in my family room. I have most of their CDs. I love listening to the music but enjoy the experience that much more when I can see them performing on the screen.

I enjoy Norah Jones, and sheepishly say that Karen Carpenter had/has one of the most amazing voices of all time. The Eagles Farewell Tour and When Hell Freezes over are totally off the chain on my new A/V equipment as well. I dig on Chris Isaak and am an Enigma fan from way back.

I remember when I was a teen I wouldn't have admitted that that I could like somebody like Karen Carpenter for any amount of money to any of my friends for fear of being rode out for life. Back then it was all about Boston, Frampton, Kiss, Def Leppard, Billy Squier, Zeppelin, etc. busting away at those Jensen Triaxials.

Now I am getting close to growing up at 45 I will admit to anybody anything that I think is talent with total disregard to what they might think aboout me or my tastes in music.

My home was burglarized while I was vacationing mid July in Florida and they took everything we had of value. I lost my Sony 50 inch plasma and Def Tech Mythos and now I am thoroughly enjoying my Pioneer Elite 60 inch plasma, Wilson Sophia 2s, Def Tech Super Cube and B & W in walls for my rears for now. I am running a Lexicon RV-8 with a Classe CDP-300 disc spinner. I want to trade my brand new Lexicon for Classe amp and SSP very soon. I love the sound of the Lexi but enjoy the artistic appeal and reputation of the Classe. I have to give that DVD/CD player some siblings with the digital touchscreen interface.

Sorry about the novel but thought I'd throw my info out there so people would know what I am listening to, watching and playing it on.

I'd love to hear what some of you enjoy listening to and watching and what you are experiencing your tunes and vids on.

I have in my collection and like all of those bands. I also think I have a somewhat diverse taste in music although I've never really gotten into classical all that much and I don't care for Jazz because the high frequencies of the instruments drive me crazy.

I grew up in the Disco era and think the '80s were the best decade for music ever, followed ever so closely by the '70s. Both of those statements will bring ridicule from the younger generation and those that like to parrot 'Disco Sucks' and other nonsense. There were so many genres emerging from the '80s it is not even funny - many of which endure in some form or another.

I'll say it Loud and Clear - I like Disco, Freestyle, Funk and any other name you want to apply to that type of music. When people ask for suggestions for bass tracks to test music I usually say something like Planet Patrol and invariably the response is 'huh?'

You're just a baby (I'm 41). That's not to say that you don't have 'grown up' thoughts and responsibilities but deep down inside you are a kid, at least that is how I feel about it.

Thanks for the sentiments on the burglary. Very devastating and a feeling of violation that I don't think I'll ever get over. I just hope time heals like it does with other things. I wake up with it (if I can sleep, I think of it all day and go to bed with it).

MDS, your music tastes sound IDENTICAL to mine. I also love the disco music. My mother passed away in 1978 and my dad started dating again in the disco ero and it puts smiles on my face to think of my dad listening to Donna Summer and the gang. He passes away in 1987 and the 20th anniversary of his death just occurred 4 days after my burglary which was Friday the 13th. I wasn't superstitious but I am thinking I might ought to be!

I like the funk too and it brings back fond memories of driving to Ohio to get into the clubs because their drinking age was 18 instead of KYs 21. It was fun to drink then but lost it's appeal when it became legal. It's been almost 16 years since I drank alcohol. No drinking problem just didn't appreciate hangovers.

Mazer, I think I just responded to a post of yours regarding Def Techs.

I will take some pics of my new gear as soon as I can get some of the boxes and junk put away and bring some order to the room. I just ordered a killer sectional from Arhaus with a chais and plenty of room for everybody to lounge and know I will take some pics when I get all of that together. I also am dying to get an Ekornes Stressless chair for my intense listening duties that I can pull over into my sweet spot. The Wilson dealer set the speakers up for a sweet spot in anticipation of my new furniture.

My only regret so far is not going on and buying the Classe amp and SSP up front but I got in a hurry and bought what they had in stock and worked me a good deal on. I had nothing for about 6 weeks so I was ready for some tunes and shows.

MDS, I'd love to hear more about some of your favorite music to listen to since our music tastes are so similar.

IMO Andrea Bocelli voice could be the best male vocals ever. And the same could be said for Sarah Brightman. I also think she's pretty hot.

MDS, my take on Jazz

MDS, I couldn't help but get a chuckle out of your take on jazz. As much of an appreciation as I try to have for all genres of music jazz is not one that my ears really agree with. There is a lot of repetitious and continuous brass that just strikes a nerve with me. For all you jazz lovers don't take that personal but I have a very intense noise sensitivity problem with certain things and frequencies and certain noises like clanking dishes and glasses, crunching ice, popping gum, smacking lips, etc., gets on my very last nerve. I am quite a bit high strung and I usually find jazz to grate at my nerves. Not much on blues because I am a bit high maintenance person that requires good weather, sunshine, good moods, and good vibes and don't like things that bring me down. I did watch the movie Ray on DVD today and thought that not only was movie very good but the music was good as well. Not as bluesy as some.

Probably more cents worth than what anybody asked for but hey I am new and you all might as well know what makes me tick.

I am possibly as complex as my tastes in music!

MDS, I'd love to hear more about some of your favorite music to listen to since our music tastes are so similar.

That would take page upon page, but briefly here are the highlights:

- '70s 'super bands': Styx, Kansas, Foreigner, Journey, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Boston, REO Speedwagon, and on and on.
- What used to be called 'heavy metal': Dio, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc.
- '80s 'hair bands': Poison, Motley Crue, Tesla, Europe, etc.
- Female vocalists: Cher, Taylor Dayne, Stevie Nicks, etc.
- Disco: Bee Gees, Donna Summer, the million other one-hit-wonders.
- Freestyle: Shannon, Trinere, Planet Patrol, TKA, etc.

It's an impossible task to name them all...if you can name it, chances are I have it.

Maze, We need to talk by phone sometime soon. I am blown away from some of the similarities that I have seen and heard from you.

Your home is beautiful. My home turns 22 this year but it's somewhat contemporary and I have some similar things such as a grand piano, and similar tastes in furniture and decor. Your home looks to be new.

It's funny seeing your SunDancer because I almost caused a divorce last year over a new SeaRay 300 SunDancer. I am in KY and it was brand new in the plastic in South Carolina. It seemed to be the deal of the century to me...listed for $204,000 and I could have bought it for $112,000 brand spanking new. It's the only time in my life that I asked for my wifes blessing on a purchase as I have always followed the better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission. I stay in trouble with her CONSTANTLY about my purchases being a car-a-holic and toy freak. New iPhone first day out, new iMac last year and then another new one a couple weeks ago on the day the new one debuted. If it's new I have to have it and it drived her crazy. She just doesn't understand. She has NO CLUE what I have tied up in my new gear. If she knew what I dropped on the Wilsons alone she would probable divorce me.

I forget to mention that I did NOT get the boat because she would have divorced me if I had. She was furious for two weeks......imagine what she would have done if I pulled the trigger on it??

I also have to note that you reside in the very place that I want to move to. I live in the middle of 140 acres and have a 40 acre lake in my backyard. I don't fish and I don't hunt and all I do is have to pay taxes, insurance, and upkeep so that everybody else can trespass on me and enjoy the fruits of my labor and I am fed up with it. Since the burglary I am wanting desperately to move South to either the gulf coast or on into the Caribbean. She was dead set against a move because of leaving her family but the prime suspect of this burglary involves somebody in her family so that kind of takes away that reason to stay. It has seriously strained the relationship and we haven't got enough concrete proof yet but an abundance or circumstantial evidence. It's a horrible crime and has twists and turns that the very best mystery novel couldn't begin to encompass.

In 2004 my home had extensive interior damage Hurricane Frances. My roof shingles, and tar paper came off, and water just poured in from the gaps between the plywood. My interior ceilings dropped to the ground from being wet. Interior walls had water inside of them. So I gutted the inside of the house, and started over. Everything you see is new. Kitchen, Bathrooms, Appliances, Flooring, Cabinets, everything. So yes I have a new house if you want to look at it that way.

I wanted a boat for the longest time. So after many hours on-line drooling over boats, and going to boat show after boat show year after year. I went out, and purchased a boat. My wife found out that evening when I brought it home on a trailer. It is listed as 27'', but the bow pulpit, and swim platform are not included in the footage. So in todays standards it was a 30'. Twin screw 4.3's. I no longer have that boat. All the Marina's in this area are still damaged, and never rebuilt from the 2004 hurricane season.
