I need a pair of headphones that are preferably shock proof/resistant and/or water proof/resistant. I need them for when I go snowboarding. I have went through 2 pairs of headphones already - now they will only play into one ear or have fallen apart (a cheapish pair and the white headphones that come with an i-pod ). I was wondering if anyone has a product reccomendation for me as far as a a pair of headphones that will be able to withstand the forces of snowboarding. I've looked into a few models aready but I am not sure how durable they acutally would be for my use, anyone got a suggestion?

While I'm not a snowboarder it would seem that unless you do it completely alone you would want to be able to hear what's going on around you. That's why it's illegal to wear them while driving a car.:D

Joe, while it is good to hear when you're sitting at the top of the mountain talking, it is not necessary when your going down at 40mph about to hit a 20ft tabletop. A lot of people wear headphones - just watch any snowboarding competition and you'll see what I mean.

Those koss headphones look pretty nice, but for $20, i'm wondering how durable they would be for snowboarding...
Thanks for the idea though, I might order a pair and find out.

The snowboarding manufacterer, Burton, came out with a hat that has built in headphones. It's not too expensive and would probably work nicely, but the hat itself looks dumb.

I've seen hats like these. The headphones aren't that great. I would stick with the Koss ones I suggested earlier. I know they sound good.

Although I don't snowboard I do ski. The last thing I want is to be surrounded on the slopes by people who can't hear what is going on around them. I consider them dangerous to themselves (I don't really care about that) and me. Dangerous to me is something I'm concerned about. In snowboarding competitions there are not crowds of other people out there at the same time. So the situation is quite different. Blocking out the rest of the world while you are out there with others is kind of selfish and inconsiderate.

I once tried listening to music while skiing . Aside from any safety issues, it was a distraction from the joy of skiing. Perhaps on the chair lift it would be useful for me, but I never took a PLD skiing after that first day.

I'm with Joe on this one. It's part of the responsibility code. You don't want to crash into someone and hurt them while wearing your headphones.

you have your eyes to see whats going on around you...are you saying deaf people can't snowboard?

Anyway, the topic of this post wasn't to debate wether or not its a good idea (I know from personal experience that the former is true), but to determine, from an audio/durability standpoint, what product will meet the demands.

So far, i've heard one suggestion, and it sounds like a good one so I am considering investing in it. I still got a few months before the snowboarding season kicks off around here, so my options are still open.

The deaf don't deliberately make themselves deaf. Those who are deaf would probably give a great deal to be able to hear at all. Making yourself deaf in a hazardous situation shows a lack of respect and concern for those around you. It seems as though there is a good reason for the attitude lots of skiers have about boarders. You should ask those around you "that you can't hear" how they feel.:D

If you ask about something that other members of the forum think is foolish or dangerous you may get some heat about it. What's wrong with that?

Would you guys just help him or shut up? Holy crap.

Try the Koss ones. They sound pretty good, and are clip ons. Try not to fall.

Sony MDR-7506 or Sony MDR-V6(Not the MDR-V600). They are very durable, I doubt you would hurt these things. They also sound great for the price. Better than anything else I have seen recommended so far.

This isn't video game snowboarding. Those won't stay on his head.

If he wanted to wear headphones while driving what would you say? Is there all that much difference when other people are involved?

I have never had any success with Koss. I own Shure E2 earphones and love them. They're durable, a bit more costly--by far, worth the price.

Right, I forgot a snowboarder has the same moving momentum as a car. Silly me.

Just to inform anyone that doesn't take to the slopes, every snowboarder uses headphones. So if you've been skiing, and saw someone on a snowbaord that didn't hit you, theres a good chance they had headphones on.

I have those headphones too. Bought them for the gym, but I don't like how they sound. The Koss ones drounced them in every way except bass response.

Of course getting hit by a 2 ton car travelling 40MPH is far worse than a 200 pound idiot travelling at the same speed. The point is I want neither to happen.:D

Joe, snowboarding is hazardous based on one's level of skill and visual awareness, not hearing ability. Yes, they are illegal to wear in cars, but that is like comparing apples to elephants.

E-6, like sheep said, those things are a little too big - and expensive - for my needs. But thanks anyway for making a reasonable suggestion instead of scrutinizing the outrageous and unspeakable thought of... *gasp*- snowboarding with headphones.

Sheep, those koss ones are adjustable to fit various ear sizes, right? I'm going to pick up a pair and try them out. Even if they don't turn out to be good for boarding (or maybe they'll work too good, and i'll kill an unsuspecting skier like joe), They should still make a nice pair for the PC or PLD. And for $20, you can't go wrong. Thanks for the idea, and for trying to talk some sense into those stuborn posters out there.

Skiers are on the same slopes and we don't wear headphones. I suppose being totally self centered and completely selfish just doesn't wash with skiers. The me first and to hell with everyone else attitude is why a large majority of skiers don't have a lot of respect for boarders.
