which is proper connection using HDMI or digital coaxial?
I play cd's on the player and very few movies.

Either-your preference. HDMI has higher capabilities for multi-ch/lossless codecs, tho.

If you have a surround system meaning a center channel, surrounds, and perhaps a sub, I would use HDMI for two reasons. 1) As lovinthehd said, HDMI has enough bandwidth to carry the lossless codecs found on Blurays where coax cable does not. Coax can only handle lossy codecs. 2) It simplifies the wiring where the HDMI cable carries both audio and video. For the coax route, you would need to add another cable to carry the video. :)

Here's another reason for HDMI for stereo. It will carry hi-res, while IEC 958 and optical S/PDIF will limit you to 24/96 with some pre/pros. Consider this: get a new 4K Bluray player from Sony; and, from HDMI output, you can enjoy your Stereo CDs, as well as, stereo and multi-channel SACDs.
