HDMI vs Component?

My new HT is now complete! The Panasonic AE900 finally came in, and it's all set up. My question is regarding the connection of the Panasonic S77 DVD player. Presently I have it connected with a 3' component cable (to the Denon 3805). If I use a long (& expensive) HDMI cable directly to the projector, the S77 will apparently up the image to 1080. So, if I were to do this, would the picture quality be noticably better?

Any & all related advice/info is appreciated.

Not that it helps much, but the answer is that you might see an improvement.

The native resolution of your projector is 1280x720 pixels, but the projector will accept an 1920x1080 interlaced signal. It won't 'up' the picture to 1920x1080 pixels since you are limited by your projectors native resolution at all times.

I did mention that you still might see an improvement though. That was through the use of an HDMI connection. It's up to you of course, but from my own perspective, I wouldn't bother. I've compared component against HDMI, and couldn't definitively state that there was an improvement. Bear in mind that others say that they can see a noticeable improvement though.

My advice? See if you can get a loan of a cable from a shop to do your own comparison using your own DVD player and Projector.

Buckle is right on! Borrow a cable. You might have to use your visa card to hold it, but get one and check it out. Check out the review of that dvd player. It is a good litle player. I would not have it upconvert to 1080i though. Just have it output to 720P.

You do not want to upconvert 480P to 1080I, only to down convert to 720P. do you see what I am saying? To many conversions. Up convert to 720P would be my settings.

I play around with my S77 To be honest some times I notice a difference, and sometimes I do not. The question will be....try it... see if it is worth the 150 or so bucks. 50/50 on if you think it is worth it or not.

I installed my HDMI cable and found a difference, a BAD difference. I found the HDMI to be more blurry and colors were worse. So I went back to component. I then decided to have my DLP ISF cali brated and I mentioned that I ws disappointed with HDMI to Chad (the ISF guy). He said has surprised and that he would fix that. Sure enough, HDMI looks fantastic now... VERY HAPPY with the picture. I would recommend to you and anyone else, get your equipment ISF calibrated. It was well worth the $350 he charged me...

I can't comment on what he would charge you but I can tell you what I had done and the cost involved. I had Chad calibrate my DLP and tweak my audio system. Chad arrived at 11am on Sat. He left at 8:30pm. He spent the last 2 hours adjusting levels on my audio system using Avia disc. So for 9.5 hours, he charged me $414 total. He also drove 3 hours 1 way and there is no charge for travel. He has prices listed on his site. I would even suggest you email him if you are considering this option.

Sorry about that - I didn't notice that. So yes, I doubt he would charge $414... He not that nice...

Add 6 hours drive time, and he's making $26.71 an hour minus gasoline. Assuming he's driving a vehicle averaging 20mpg, he would have used approximately a tank of gas - possibly another $50. He's down to $23.48 an hour.

Chad is either the greatest dude in the world, or he needs to take a few more classes to get things tweaked a little quicker. In any event, there's no argument about fine tuning a system to its full potential. You've spent your money wisely.

My 2910 looks better out of HDMI, but the S77 is sometimes, sometimes not. But we are talking 250 buck DVD player vs. 600 buck DVD player. Guess the HDMI is better out of the 2910 and a few other things. But the S77 is still a bad little machine for the loot that is for sure.

I wonder what the origonal poster will find when he tries the HDMI? I hope that he post his findings.

ISF calibration and the AVIA disk is the way to go.

And that dude works cheap. Good on ya for such a good deal. That is awesome!

This is interesting to me, as I also have the S2500. My system used to be within a couple of meters of my projector, which is why I was looking into buying an HDMI cable. I tried out the cable in the shop with their S2500, but unfortunately it was hooked up to a Pioneer Plasma. It was with this particular setup that I couldn't definitively say that I noticed an improvement (though the Pioneer is a fabulous display). Shortly after, I moved my system, and after that, there was noooooo way that I was going to splash out on an HDMI cable that long!

I want to go to England!

Thanks all for your responses! As the answer appears to be debatable, I think I'll just leave 'er as is. If it was a definate no-brainer Yay or nay, (like a DVD offers a better picture than a VHS) then I would go & buy the HDMI.
