Hi Experts,

I have Onkyo 605 as receiver, Old Panasonic plasma as TV.
My TV is 5 year old and DOESN'T have HDMI connections.

I was thinking to connect all devices to Onkyo using HDMI and then connecting HDMI output from Onkyo to some "HDMI to VGA" converter and connect VGA output to TV.

I looked at HdFury product which i feel might be able to do exactly what i want.
But before i buy any converter, i wanted your expert advise.

Q1. Has anybody tried this setup and how was the picture quality.
Q2. What product (convert or cable) will you recommend.

Thanks
Tanya

Picture quality will be unaffected and the "blue edition" works. The other solution might be to just run component and save the $150 bucks.

It might work for you. The converter gets is power from the +5 volt on data pin three. This has a phantom power source. When in operation this HD Fury converter draws 0.4 amp, so 2 watts of power. Not all devices have this much power available on pin 3, in which case you will need an external +5 volt supply.

According to reviews it is not compatible with all TVs so you will take a chance.

The device will make the HDCP hand shake with your receiver, but the device only claims HDCP compatibility and is not certified. So you may have hand shake issues and a disappointment.

Quite honestly your best bet, and most reliable solution is a TV upgrade.

+1 with this suggestion. Component video although analog provides a very clear picture, much better I would guess than running through a seperate VGA converter. According to page 25 of your receiver's manual,

■ HDMI Monitor Setting Set to No
With the HDMI Monitor setting set to No (see
page 47), video input signals flow through the
AV receiver/AV amplifier as shown, with composite
video and S-Video sources being upconverted
for the component video output. Use this
setting if you connect the AV receiver/AV amplifier’s
COMPONENT VIDEO OUT to your TV.
Composite video is upconverted to S-Video and
S-Video is downconverted to composite video.
Note that these conversions only apply to the
MONITOR OUT V and S outputs, not the
VCR/DVR OUT V and S outputs.
The composite video, S-Video, component
video, and HDMI outputs pass through their
respective input signals as they are.

I'm also agree with bandphan - you should go all analog video with component cable (3 plugs cable) and digital audio separately. if you have BR player change outputs from bitstream to 7.1 lpcm - you can't bitstream new high res audio over spd/if cable.
Only limitation (doesn't affect you) is component cable is limited by 1080i vs 1080p (and higher on hdmi), however as I said before - it doesn't affect you since if your tv doesn't have hdmi input - I can 100% assure you - it doesn't support native 1080p ether ....

Just my 2c

Thanks a lot for your replies.
main reason i have to look at this option is because Onkyo 605 has just 3 component video inputs and i am already using all three but now i want to connect it to newly bought WII but have no ports for it..

So i was thinking to use two HDMI ports for Blue ray player and Cable and that will free up two component inputs for other devices.

So is HdFury the best converter or should i look at other devices sold at Ebay ?

Thansk again

It helps to know why you need a device!

You don't need a converter at all. You need this.

It will be cheaper, better and more reliable.

I've got something of a follow up which hasn't been asked...

What Panasonic TV in the last 5 years has not had a DVI or a HDMI input on it?

The TV is listed as 5 years old, and I know my projector from about 8 years ago had a DVI input on it standard (non-HDCP), but that was about the end of displays not coming standard with a DVI or HDMI input. If it is a 'pro' plasma, it may not have had the input module, but then I would go buy the HDMI input module for that TV.

Please post the model number of your Panasonic plasma because it seems like you are getting answers for what (to me) shouldn't be an issue at all.
