HDMI to Component???

Is there a reciever/processor that will take an HDMI signal (such a PS 3) and export it to a tv that accepts only component?

Hi, I'm not sure that's actually possible within the receiver due to the HDCP encryption present in the HDMI signal coming out of the PS3 with most things.

There other ways around it with external boxes that sort of 'bypass' the HDCP issue such as the HDFury series of converters available at curtpalme.com

If you aren't TOO fussy and don't mind just 1080i, you can always use a component cable adaptor from your PS3 to your amp/receiver that has component inputs and again to the tv (or just to the tv if you don't have an amp)

HDMI has built in copyright protection, and it goes from start to finish with the handshake - So it starts at the PS3 carries through the receiver and the display is the final link in the chain....

Emotiva is stating their new processor is capable of what you are looking for, but I'm not sure how that is going to work out...

Just run a RGB -component cable and then optical for audio and you get the same exact performance... no difference.... just 1 more cable...

From what I've read the UMC will pass HDMI to component as long as no copyrighted material is being played. I've also seen this in several receiver manuals but can't remember offhand which ones can do that. What Emotiva have stated is it can do this 'subject to Macrovision'.
Many are unaware that component is also subject to HDCP rules governing copyrighted materials.

I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't just START with component video in the first place? There's not a single component that I'm aware of which only will output HDMI and will not put out component video or some other level of HD analog video, except maybe the generation 1 Western Digital TV.

If you need component - use component!

One reason to try and use both is because my wife likes to only turn on the TV and watch. The only way to get a HD signal through both would be to use HDMI to receiver and Component directly to the TV. Though I might not even need to do this as I just saw her watching tv through composite and she did not even notice Oh to be the only one in the house that cares for top quality audio and video

Why is that? Why wouldn't you hook up both (all?) of your sources to your receiver via component cables?

Because we would have to turn on the receiver just to watch tv.

Also, if your wife is confused on proper setup, then you need a universal remote of good enough quality that it works 99%+ reliably. This is something people gloss over as they drop $2,000 on a TV that their family can't figure out, or have an older display with some issues.

A good universal remote allows for one touch operation by any family member, guest, or in-laws - and it is a great Christmas gift... oops, to late!

Continuing the problem solution from the other 7 page thread, this is all that has to be done.

Connect the HDMI to component cable I linked from the PS3 straight to the display.

Connect the digital audio output from the PS3 to the receiver/pre-pro.

As far as cable or sat, connect component video straight to the display.

Connect the highest audio option from the cab/sat box to the display.

Connect HDMI from cab/sat to the receiver.

Problem solved again.

Compromises are made that have to be made in order to achieve what you are wanting to achieve.
