HI

Strange one here - HDMI Switcher plays SOME DVD movies with BOTH audio and sound and OTHER movies IT WILL DISPLAY A BLUE SCREEN accompanied by sound ??????

I have a DIGITECH AC1694 4 port Optical audio and HDMI switcher (HDCP & 1080p capable ) that has an Olin HVBT 2000 HD SET TOP BOX (1080p) and a Samsung HD VR-355 DVD/VCR (576p/780p) Combo going thru it to a NEC PXT-42XD1 Plasma (576p/780p) All units and HDMI Cables are V1.3.

The Video and sound is fine for TV Channels from the Set Top Box to the TV and surround sound system through the HDMI switcher on Port 1 of the switcher. (SET TOP BOX) using HDMI and TOS cables

The Video and sound is fine from the VCR playing videos to the TV and surround sound system through the HDMI switcher on Port 2 of the switcher. (DVD / VCR COMBO) using HDMI and TOS cables

The DVD player passes audio and video thru fine from the switcher to the TV via HDMI and surround sound system by Tos Optical fine at 576p BUT ONLY FOR OLDER DVD"S movies

FOR NEWER DVD'S It passes thru SOUND ONLY and displays an entire Blue screen on the plasma.

If when suffering a blue screen you cycle to vcr or set top box on port 1 you immediately get video restored. Changing back to DVD gives the blue screen again. I have tried resetting all units and have tried different leads and settings . At the moment Plasma and DVD are set to 576p.

If I run the HDMI cable directly between the DVD and the Plasma it will Play ALL DVD movies - picture and sound.

Why is this switcher being fussy about displaying video for different type DVD movies showing some (newer DVD'S) as blue screen with sound and others (older ones) perfectly.

ie Robo Cop plays video and sound , Serenity, Gettysburg, Fantastic 4 etc play with sound and a blue screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

It almost seems like a HDMI/HDCP handshake issue. Try to experiment with which units are turned on first and last with the movies that displays the blue screen. This has helped others in the past.

Thanks Mtrycrafts

Yes it seems so -

Although why it handshakes fine with some DVD's and not others is the problem.

I though the " handshake " was authenticating between devices ( switcher and plasma) not between the dvd movie discs and plasma .

The device handshake happens fine as evidenced by the fact the vcr video movies from the DVD /VCR Combo (one single device) and the set top box both running through the switcher are handshaked as hdmi input source at 576p on the plasma and display both audio and video fine .

The DVD side of the DVD/VCR Combo also handshakes fine as evidenced by the fact that it WILL DISPLAY SOME DVD VIDEO for some movies and not others.

It is also frustrating because for instance Robo Cop and Fantastic 4 both display the CP (Copy Protected) logo on the back covers of the DVD, yet Robo Cop displays video and Fantastic 4 blue screen.

I have tried all cycles of powering up and down for the same results.
The only difference is when TV allready on and Blue screen displayed, if you power off the switcher and then repower on the blue screen does show about 1-2 seconds of video and souns before reverting to blue screen and audio only.

Is there different versions of Copy protections on DVD Movies that get involved in this " handshake " with older versions showing Video and newer ones Not. And - IF So - If the DVD Copy protection itself is causing the failed handshake then why do they work over hdmi directly to the Plasma bypassing the switcher that is handshaking as adevice with the plasma fine.

It would defeat the purpose of the switcher for video however as my plasma only has one HDMI Input - IS there a HDMI "double adaptor" that I could use to plug in to this single HDMI input on the plasma that I could run the cables from DVD/VCR Combo and SET Top Box to the plasma directly eliminating the Switcher for video and use it for Tos Audio only.

I think it is an HDMI handshake issue not DVD copy protection, unless the DVD has some flags on it, not sue.

I think I have seen HDMI Y type adaptors but not sure where.
Another solution is to also connect component cable to TV?

I think you need a switcher with more recent architecture. There are so many versions of the HDCP codes, 9 plus numerous connections when I last checked, and that was before 1.3.

You need the latest version of switching architecture. Switches and receivers, anything that outputs HDMI are held to a much higher standard than end devices like a TV display. If you search these forums you will find out that HDMI is a real dog's dinner.

:)Hi Mtrycrafts

Thanks - actually I just heard from the supplier after 5 days

Their reply seems to point to a problem with the Single HDMI Output Port of the Unit as they are requesting its return. I dont profess to understand this given it plays almost everything fine however if they are willing to replace it free of charge who am I to argue. Just goes to show you never can tell whats going on with HDMI at the moment.

For your info here is there reply

Hi Th0r, it sounds like there is a problem with the HDMI output port rather than a HDCP issue, it would probably be best to get you to return the switch. You can return the item to the below address and we will arrange a refund/credit/exchange (please advise). Our return address is:

Thanks for that, Maybe we consumers should all start a class action about all this
hassle happening in Home E at the moment. Anway Ill see if the new switcher is any better - maybe it was only a faulty HDMI output....
