HDMI switch with equalizer

I am looking to buy an HDMI switch and wanted to know why some come with an equalizer?

From a quick look around the net, it appears the signal equalizer is to provide better performance with long cable runs.

They shouldn't call it an 'equalizer'. Digital signal is repeated, sometimes with errors being corrected, and unless the signal falls below a specified level, that's unchanged.
