I'm new to hdmi so I may be a little off but here goes...

I'll be purchasing an LCD TV soon with HDMI inputs. I have a PS3 which I will also use as my main DVD/Blue Ray player. I plan on connecting the two with an HDMI cable so everything should be good there.

I also have a non-hdmi sony 5.1 800w (i think) system that is just okay. And I don't plan on upgrading my audio system any time soon.

So if I am seeing this correctly, the sound for games and movies played on the PS3 will come through the TV's speakers as HDMI. Whereas if I output the sound to my audio system, it will be analog - right?

So would this ultimately mean that my TV speakers will produce a better sound than my surround sound and I should just ebay the stupid thing?

You can make digital connections either through optical (toslink) or digital coaxial connectors from the source to the receiver or from the TV digital output to the receiver. You can get digital sound (i.e. 5.1, etc.) from the digital connections, but if you want the latest and greatest high definition sound from the PS3, you would need a receiver that has HDMI connections and also processes HDMI sound.
