Hi,
I am a bit confused on how to do this. I recently bought a 42" Pioneer Kuro Plasma and a Denon 2808 receiver. I have a HDMI connected from the monitor HDMI on the Denon to the back of the tv and another HDMI connected from my Dish Network HD receiver directly to the TV. Is this correct? Am I getting HDMI this way? I have an older DVD player which is not HDMI connected with composite cables and a CD player using optical. I have gone thru the setup numerous times but I still can't seem to make heads or tails of this.

Thanks for anyone help.

hdmi is a signal transport not a format. Does your dvd player have component outputs? Do you want to use the receiver to 'SWITCH" your sources for you instead of multiple inputs on the tv?

Dish Network box should use HDMI to reciever. The receiver will decode the audio from HDMI and then pass the video through it's output to the TV. The DVD should use component and optical to the receiver, if it has component video.

You will likely need to assign the HDMI input and output, as well as the optical audio input, in the setup menu of the Denon. You probably will also need to turn on the analog-digital conversion function on for the DVD input source.

Dave,
Yes the Dish has a HDMI and I connected it directly to the TV. Is that right or should I use one of the 2 Denon HDMI's? Denon has assigned DVD #1, #2 open and one specifically assigned for the monitor. The denon setup does not address the monitor for configuring audio and video only the other 2 HDMI which I don't have anything connected to them.

current set up
Dish-hdmi connected directly to the tv.

Denon monitor HDMI connected to tv hdmi. The receiver set up does not allow for HDMI configuration of the monitor HDMI jack.

Old DVD component/RCA jacks to Denon

CD changer-optical.

Should I run the dish thru the 2nd hdmi slot in the receiver?

I would run the Dishnet into the receiver, HDMI 1 or 2, doesn't matter. The receiver will also convert the component/composite video to HDMI and sent it to the TV via its HDMI monitor, but you have to tell it to do that. This way, you can use the receiver to select all your audio/video sources and you only need one HdMI cable connected to the TV.

I have switched the dish HDMI thru the denon but for some reason my local channels (watching ncaa bb) the video doesn't appear to be as clear? Could I be missing something in the set up? The HD channels look great.

Check your output resolution settings. See if it's set to pass-through or upscaling to a given resolution. You may be able to improve the image by altering the output resolution. It's hard to guage the effectiveness of different scalers, etc. without some trial and error.

Thanks Dave for all of your time and help. I think I have it as good as it is going to get. Hopefully next year I will get a Blue Ray DVD.
