If there is a component out they can use that. If not: complain to comcast that paying for the HD channels is useless without a HD box.

Does your sister's Comcrap box have "component video" output (3 RCA connectors with red-green-blue color codes) ? This is the method to get analog HD video from the set top box without HDMI to an HD TV.

My father in law has comcast in Houston, and once he got an HDTV, he just had to take his SD cable box w/remote to one of their offices and switch out for an HD version, and it was free. Same thing for me with TimeWarner, I took my SD box in and swapped out with an HD box. There shouldn't be any fees to do this, just a swap unless comcast in FLorida does things differently.

One note of interest though, this won't get them a cable box with DVR. If they want a DVR then they will have to pay extra each month, probably like $10 a month.

A few questions need to be answered.

HD service is an extra charge feature, at least it is for the Comcast where we live. IOW, it's not part of the basic package here.

Are you sure she is subscribed to a HD service? If not, then they need to upgrade their service to begin with. If they already subscribe, then continue reading.

Now, you don't NEED HDMI to enjoy HD cable. You only NEED HDMI for 1080p programming which, for now, is only available via blu-ray discs.

Cable HD it only passes up to 1080i, and component video is more than adequate. My Comcast/Motorola only has component outputs and it puts out a beautiful picture.

On my Time-Warner(Brighthouse) box, the color saturation is actually noticeably better on their component out.

The RNG-100, from my little research, is not an HD-box. You won't get HD broadcasting until this cable box is changed with one that is HD.

A little Google is helpful on these issues...

The RNG100 is a non-standard box, but appears to be a version of their 1540 box here...

Which is not a HD model.

Go to the cable company and get a HD cable box and HD cable service. It'll have a HDMI connection on the box.

Ask for a HDMI cable from the cable company. They typically give you one for free. If they do NOT, get one at www.monoprice.com
