HDMI - DirecTV HD DVR problems?

I just purchased a Panasonic TH-50PX60U Plasma TV. I attempted to connect my DirecTV HD DVR (HR 10-250) to the television via an HDMI cable.

It was a disaster. The picture was distorted. The only colors that appeared were red, pink, and blue. I thought I might have a problem with the television. I then connected the DVR to the TV using component video cables and the picture was fine.

I could have just stopped there but I wanted to use the HDMI connection I had heard so many good things about. So I bought a second HDMI cable and tried again. The same thing happened...a red, pink, and blue distorted picture.

I called DirecTV. They acknowledge some problems with the HR 10-250 HDMI output but had not heard of the problem I was experiencing.

The DirecTV customer service rep proceeded to tell me that the picture performance of component video cables "was really just as good as HDMI."

Can anyone help?

Try find out the following,
1) Are you getting any picture at all? Try HD and non-HD channels. My Panny does not support 480i via HDMI and yours probably does not either. If you can see the HD channels but not the rest, make sure the Satellite Box outputs at least 480p for the non-HD channels.
2) Get a DVD player with HDMI out and see if it works on the TV (this will eliminate the TV as being the cause)
3) If possible try the HDMI from the Satellite box on some other TV's HDMI input (this one might be tough but will eliminate the Satellite Box from being the cause)

If the devices work independent of each other, the only thing I can think of is HDCP. The Panny TV's HDMI input can only work with HDCP encripted signal. If your satellite provider does not encript HDMI out signal using HDCP, it will not be decode by the TV.
