HDMI connectivity issue-missing sound channels

I have had a Denon 2807 Receiver for a few years and have finally purchased a HDMI capable Blu-Ray (LG) & HD-TV(Sony). When I connect the Blu-Ray unit via the HDMI connection on receiver (BDP-AMP-TV -all HDMI connectors), the picture is fine, however there are problems with sound reproduction. For example -certain characters voice is extremely faint or inaudible, the sound drops in & out -volume seems to get extremely loud or inaudible. When I go direct from the Blu-Ray player to TV (HDMI), it seems to work fine. I have tried to check all the appropriate settings on the Blu-Ray player & Receiver, but have not been able to resolve the issue. Are there any obvious settings I need to check or are there compatibility issues with HDMI that I need to be aware of.

Checked with Denon -HDMI version is 1.1. I suspect the BluRay version is 1.3. Is this a compatibility issue or configuration of BDP/AMP or both?

Your suspicions are correct. the culprit is most likely the age and thereby the 1.1 hdmi standard on your denon.

Many of the early hdmy products where/are dodgy when interfacing with newer components

will your receiver handle digital audio from a standard upscaling DVD player over HDMI ? The receiver specs show it does not decode any of the newer HD lossless audio codecs, so if your new blu-ray is setup to send those codecs over HDMI the receiver cannot handle them.

Try setting the blu-ray player menu to send PCM or "dolby digital" over HDMI instead of over Toslink optical or digital audio coax (then normal way to get dolby digital to the receiver).

in the case of the TV, it has signaled the player that it is a stereo device and the player has set the digital audio over HDMI correctly for the TV. The receiver is not doing this inter-unit signaling over HDMI
