HDMI cable, barely works, or no big deal?

My first post, I figure might as well jump right into the fire, and HDMI is kind of new to me as well so ... Do HDMI cables barely work, or is it kind of easy and all cables should work the same?

Start my confusion with the fact that 100 feet or more of 25 cents a foot coax brings 400 channels, including all the HD channels into my house, then it takes $100 worth of HDMI cable to go the 10 feet from my cable box to TV with one channel. I understand HDMI is uncompressed, but come on, I have been running 1600x1200 with an old svga cable to a monitor for the last 10 years or more at 135 hz refresh.

48 hours ago I thought I sort of understood this stuff, and cavalierly made some digital is digital comments on the sony forums, read the info at HDMI.org and further looked over the HDMI testing stuff at tektronics.com, and just read the tech peice here on HDMI cables, and now starting to wonder how well it really works. Thanks.

While frustraing (the cost) the construction of the cable is different and the bandwidth is higher... Check out BlueJeansCable.com or DVIGear for some MUCH better pricing than what you have mentioned.

Many generic cables will pass 480p and fail 720p/1080i - MOST generic cables will NOT pass 1080p over a few feet (and aren't designed to - regardless of what their marketing literature or website says).

One thing I pointed out in the other forum, is that I don't see anybody making PQ claims. Some can be read that way maybe, but premium, new and improved etc. seems confined to "works" with long runs.

Blue Jeans seems like an ok place, but Markertek.com isn't much more and certifies 26ft cables as 1920x1280 / 1080p.

***** HDMI the RCA plug of the digital age.

I have a 35 ft BlueJeans cable and I have no issues with 720p/1080i.

If I'm about to take delivery on a Samsung DLP (that accepts 1080P over HDMI........when the content is available). Your comment of "MOST generic cables will NOT pass 1080p over a few feet" concerns me. I only need three feet or so of cable, but I was planning on purchasing a 2 meter cable so that I could have some wiggle room when messing with my components that are going to be in a "built-in" unit. Is this a bad idea?

No 2M is not a problem, up to 26ft is not a problem, but do make sure the cable you get is certified for the resolution you want in the length you buy. Cheap cables that don't mention the certified resolution likely omit that info for good reason.

I read the other day that the PS3 isn't going to be 1080p, just 1080i. Until more 1080p source stuff is around cable people will be able to get away with selling inferior goods.
