HDMI audio problems

Hello all,

I can't get my PS3 audio to work when using an HDMI connection in my system. I'm currently using an optical connection and it is working fine, but I'm looking for the 1 cable solution and higher quality audio that HDMI promises. Here's my setup:

PS3 connected by HDMI to a Sony STR-DA5200ES, then HDMI / DVI (combo. cable) connected to a Sony KF-42WE620 (which has a DVI input, not an HDMI).

I believe the problem is at the DVI input (I have heard that HDMI needs a 2 way handshake in order to complete the audio circuit?). If that's the case, is there a recommendation on a converter of some sort that could allow me to use an-all-HDMI solution?

Thanks for the help in advance.

:)

A number of receivers either can't process audio over HDMI, or can't process it and pass it out through the HDMI output at the same time. Also, you sometimes need to assign the HDMI input to an audio source.

That might be enough for you, but I'll check into your user's manual and give some more specifics in just a bit.

If you don't have it handy, you can download the owner's manual for your receiver at this link here.

There are a few places in the manual that discuss HDMI set up. Page 28 is a good starting point. The thing that I like about the PDF versions (like the one linked above) is that you can quickly search for "HDMI" or anything else.

BTW, are you trying to get sound from the PS3 to play on speakers connected to your receiver, or play through your TV speakers?

The DVI connector on your TV will not pass audio signals no matter what kind of adapter you might try. You will need an optical input or traditional RCA cable connections (stereo) to get sound into your TV. An RCA cable connection is most probable as your TV most likely only has two speakers if it has speakers at all.

The DVI connector on your TV will not pass audio signals no matter what kind of adapter you might try. Its a limitation of the DVI format that was solved with the HDMI connector where audio channels were added. You will need an optical input or traditional RCA cable connections (stereo) to get sound into your TV. An RCA cable connection is most probable as your TV most likely only has two speakers if it has speakers at all. Therefore there is probably no reason to try and pass Dolby 5.1 or better signals to the TV.

Not to make things too simple, but it wasn't mentioned, the PS3 will output either HDMI or optical but not both. Did you change the output settings in the PS3 audio menu from optical to HDMI?

I just tried to change the (automatic) audio settings to HDMI again on the PS3, and it gives me a message saying "This HDMI device cannot be used for audio output.". When I go back and try to change the settings manually, the PS3 does accept that. Then when I reassign the audio in my receiver's menu, I don't get any sound output. Hmm.....I'm thinking the tv's DVI connection for some reason is preventing the audio signal still?...

And yes, I'm trying to get the sound to come out of my 5.1 setup, not the tv's speakers.

Quickest way to check if that DVI adapter is the issue is to disconnect it and see if you have any sound.
