HDMI Audio from HP Pavilion to TX-SR605

Hello all, thanks in advance for the help. I've done quite a bit of research and haven't figured out a solution.

I have:

TX-SR605 ONKYO Receiver
HP Pavilion dv6 Laptop (HDMI Out)
Samsung 55" 3D LED LCD TV
Samsung Blu-ray player

I am trying to play HD video files from my laptop through my receiver and onto the TV. I have the HDMI Input 2 assigned to VCR (my laptop) and Input 1 assigned to the DVD (Blu-ray).

I get great video but the sound is not making it through the Receiver.

*Sound works when directly from Laptop HDMI to TV.
*Under "Playback Devices" on my laptop, I get the TV to show up as well as the ONKYO and they are both outputting sound which isolates the problem to the Receiver.

Lost, please help...

Welcome to the forum!

You didn't mention if you get sound from the Onkyo when using your DVD player, so it could be more than one thing:
  • Make sure that "HDMI Audio Out" is set to "Off" (page 84 of the Onkyo manual)
  • Make sure that "HDMI In 2" is set as the "Digital Input" for audio on the VCR input (page 50 of the manual) - it should be by default after you assigned that HDMI input to VCR, but double check that. If you are select "VCR" as the source and the front panel shows "Analog", then you know that it wasn't assigned
  • Set the digital input signal format to "Auto" (page 85 of the manual)

Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply.

Unfortunately those suggestions didn't work. I actually had all three set to your recommendations before. I rechecked them and nothing. I also tried switching the digital output to DTS and PCM with no luck.

The digital audio through the HDMI while using the Blu-ray thru the DVD input works fine. I had some problems with it initially but I changed a setting on the Blu-ray player and got it working.

What else you got?

Thanks again for the help.

bump.

Anybody? Seems like a simple enough question for somebody who knows whats up!

Thx

Here's one more thing that you could try to help narrow this down.

Try connecting the laptop to the HDMI input that you are currently using for the blu-ray player and see if you then get sound from the Onkyo. That would help determine if it's related to the specific HDMI input that you are using for the laptop (either a hardware issue or a setting that we need to track down).

Yup, actually tried that too.

It is either some sort of audio setting in the receiver or some sort of output setting of the laptop that the TV recognized but not the receiver.

Set your receiver to HDMI AMP; it might be set to HDMI Passthrough.
