HDMI 1.4 Questions???

Hello everyone. I am looking at upgrading to the HDMI 1.4 cable and I have a question. If I run it from my PS3 to my AVR and then from there to my TV will my AVR limit it to only HDMI 1.3 specs? Just wondering if I will have to upgrade my reciever too. Maybe one possibility would be to go strait from the PS3 to the TV. If anyone out there could help me on this I would appriciate it. Thanks.

Running a 1.4 cable through a 1.3 system. Why would a system produce material for a spec it was not designed for?

Also, I don't know why they would even be out yet as we wont see tv's with 1.4 hdmi for a couple of months.

The cables are out as I have already seen them on tigerdirect. The TV I have is 3D ready as are the Mitsubishi DLP's I believe. So I guess the only thing I will be waiting for is the 1.4 AVR's to come out. Well they still have some time as I still have a little more time over here in sunny Iraq.

The Mits TVs to date however do not have HDMI 1.4 connections spec. There is no electronics gear available yet that implements HDMI 1.4.

AVRat, sorry for the confusion. I was not implying that any of the current electronics out have HDMI 1.4 connection specs, I was talking about the TriDef 3D Technology that is already incorporated into Samsungs and Mits. Currently there is already a 3D starter pack out that uses glasses, your laptop and a transmitter to watch in 3D. I am looking to try this out when I get back from Iraq as I already have the TV and just need to purchase the starter pack. Here is the link that talks about TriDef technology.

I purchased 1.4 cables a month ago...was surprised they were out. i had only read about 1.4 previously and figured why not...then bought them...bc...well bc they were higher than 1.3 a,b or c.

I agree with you completely. Plus they are fairly cheap so I would not mind picking up a couple.

Buying HDMI 1.4 to REPLACE what you already own is absolutely silly.

HDMI 1.4 despite the claim that it can handle 3D, doesn't offer higher bandwidth on paper than HDMI 1.3 does. Apparently there is a channel there for 3D information in some form, and it offers audio return and Ethernet...

So, if you are putting in new gear, and are cabling a room behind walls for the first time, or just buying for the first time, then HDMI 1.4 isn't a bad way to go.

But, if it's all installed, unless you are going to HDMI 1.4 gear, and you already are fully cabled with HDMI 1.3, then you are just wasting money by replacing the cables. Makes absolutely no sense at all.

Wait, replace your receiver, TV, and BD player with HDMI 1.4 gear, then you will finally have a full HDMI 1.4 chain which can utilize the 1.4 cables.

BMXTRIX, I would not be buying it to improve my current setup but as the new HDMI 1.4 components start to tricle out onto the shelf I will start comparing and eventually buying one component at a time. Why not start with the cables as they are the first part of the setup to come out?

I'd wait on cables until hardware actually exists in the wild. I still see a lot of unanswered questions about how HDMI v1.4 and its various features will really play out in production hardware (how that ethernet channel will tie into a house network, for example) and HDMI has a bad track record of getting new things right on the first try.

From a "I'm a cheap bastard" point of view...

1. Because, the cables will drop significantly in price as more and more components come to market.

2. Because with a HDMI 1.4 Blu-ray player, which is connected to your 1.3 system everywhere else, having a 1.4 cable won't give you any benefit.

3. Because the $20 you don't spend today will net you $1 in interest at 5% for the year.

4. Really, it's because until you (or I) have HDMI 1.4 gear, replacing (not buying new) our cables is a way to spend money, not a way to improve our systems right now. Your money is better spent on ways to truly improve the acoustics of your system, and cable risers would do as good of a job improving audio/video quality as changing to a HDMI 1.4 cable.
