Some of the other members helped me get the hook up for my new Panny 54 G25 and its much appreciated. For the HD cable I have the HDMI into the monitor and a optical cable into the Yamaha. I turn the receiver onto cable/sat.

However for programs that say they are 5.1, I only get 2 channels (when I play a dvd my receiver shows that all 5 channels are working). So not sure if there is something wrong??

Thanks

To what device is the optical cable connected?

If it is from the TV optical out to the receiver then it would be normal to only get 2 channel audio because the TV will only pass Dolby Digital to the optical out if it originated from the TV's internal tuner.

Run a digital audio link directly to your receiver and go through the needed setup.

I ran the optical directly from the HD PVR to the Yamaha as I was previously advised. I turn the Yamaha on to CBL/SAT and use the THX or Dolby Digital program but no 5.1

The Yamaha indicates when it receives a 5.1 signal as it does when the BD is on but not when it is on cable

I am not aware of any setup for the cable box as I presume it just passes through the signal from the cable company?

Incorrect; there are almost always settings. Ever hit the Menu button on your cable remote?

Now, DD can still be DD 1.0 Mono, or DD 2.0 Stereo. It's not always in 5.1 by any means. Even when it's in 5.1, discrete mch audio from cable/sat providers are ho-hum at best, in my experiences.

jostenmeat

thank you and you are right of course. i had spent so much time thinking about the rest of the system that i forgot all about the cable settings

i went into the menu and changed the digital out setting from hdmi to dolby digital and it is now recognizing the 5.1 signal!!

THANKS
