I've had the same dream, but as I'm listening to high resolution audio, I also want to see the musical performance in high resolution video.
We're completely in line there, Blueray has plenty of headroom for HD video and cutting edge Hi-Rez audio at the same time

It those guys could just prioritize what benefits :)the consumers

O.K. Y'all. You've succeeded in fueling my confusion about what can decode what. Let's get specific, as future equipment purchases depend on the answer.
I have Panasonic DMP-BD10AK. It can internally decode all HD audio formats EXCEPT DTS-MA. My Yamaha RX-Z9 does not have HDMI, hence no HD audio decoders . I've been contemplating purchase of the Sony BDP-S550 as it will decode DTS-MA (and all the others) and output via 7.1 analog. However, purchasing a Yamaha RX-V663 (or HTR-6160) for use as a pre/pro would save me some bucks.
Point blank: will the DMP-BD10AK send a DTS-MA signal to the RX-V663 that the RX-V663 will properly decode, sending the correct DTS-MA audio to the RX-Z9 via 7.1 analog ?
Another question , probably better suited for another thread: How much better,if any, would the RX-V663 pre/pro into the RX-Z9 be than just the 663 (or 863) as a stand alone? Would I notice the 75 wpc (or 65wpc if 863) difference? My room is 14W X 20L with Abflector acoustic panels, carpeted floor, acoustic panel drop ceiling)
ps. How does one place one's equipment list at the bottom of each post without typing it every time ?

I thought the only profile 1.0 player that can bitstream high res audio is the Sammy BD-P1400. Without bitstreaming, you will only get the DTS-HD MA core with the DMP-BD10AK. (You do get DVD-A!)

If you want to keep your current AVR and hear DTS-HD MA, look to the Oppo, the Panny DMP-BD55 or the Sony 550 that you mentioned. If you're going to get a RX-V663, then you can save a LOT by just getting a Sammy, LG, Memorex, Insignia, etc. as you won't need internal decoding.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd stumped the panel foe a while.

Purchased a Sony 550 and I am delighted with the results allowing it to decode the audio and sending to the venerable Z-9 via 7.1 analog. It turns out that the Z-9 is unlike most other AVRs in the fact that it redigitizes analog inputs and allows application of the digital sound fields in the receiver. Hence, I can get PlIIx 7.1 out of a 5.1 analog source. Only bugaboo is that I have to tell the Z-9 if the analog source is 5.1 or 7.1. If set up as 7.1, the PlIIx does not convert a 5.1 source to 7.1. I have to set up as 5.1 in order to accomplish that. But, as there isn't much I see that I want in 7.1 movies yet, it is no biggie.

Hi,

First, great site and great forum...

Now, I have newbie question regarding this issue, I have a Logitech Z-5500, if I get a PS3, what would I need to get DD-HD?...An AV receiver is an unavoidable necessity?...Is it even possible to do?

Do all PS3's have the option to play Blu-ray? I'm in the market to get one and the few searches that I did on this forum didn't mention the answer to this question. Maybe I didn't dig deep enough. Thanks in advance.

Blu-ray was made specifically for the PS3.;) And it will do everything any other player will do. Plus you can play madden, fifa, call of duty, fallout 3, and resistance on it. No other blu-ray player offer this option.:D I think there is no contest in the blu-ray market. The PS3 is also sold at a huge loss by sony. I think it has something like 500 - 800 dollars worth of hardware in it(at the cost price point for Sony) Plus almost every gaming system is sold at cost in stores. The money is made on the connectors, controller, and games. Not on the system itself. Companies view games system as an investment that will pay them back over time. Not as an immediate money maker.

In other words. Get the cheapest PS3 you can find. Don't worry about HD space you can use external drives and even upgrade the drive yourself for a fraction of the price difference.

HD Audio Formats..

This topic reminded me of some reading I did on the Dolby Labs website on TrueHD Audio format, which I found to be pretty cool, because it is modular and lossless from Mono all the way to 10.1 or 13.1, I forget which, at up to 192kHz per channel.

This means that one high-end source signal can efficiently supply a variety of speaker arrays, given that the receiver supports TrueHD. So, a Mono receiver can just strip off everything but the Mono signal without having to process all the other channel info.

If I am correct, only HDMI supports TrueHD Audio?

I'm convinced you need to do HDNP ASAP. AFATG, U need BPRAn 2. Otherwise, you risk BTFOM.

Mostly accurate, even now with cheaper bluray players on the market, but I don't think bluray was created for the ps3! The ps3 is still, by far, the most future-proof bluray player on the market due to the ease with which it is updated and the computing power its packin'.
