Hello.

I am having trouble getting my surround backs to light up on my Yamaha V-863 AVR. I have everything hooked up to 7.1 and set:

300 on Bluray Demo.
1. AVR set to "EXTD SURR" to PIIx Movie. Decoder detects and lights up PIIx on AVR. have set to "LAST" on INPUT menu. (not AUTO)

2. PS3 on HDMI PCM. Audio on Linear PCM mode (IMO better than DolbyHD, as PS3 streams 1-1.8mb/s while LPCM@ 4-4.9mb/s

3. 7.1 confirmed ok as per YPAO setup.

Once playing the movie, everything works fine inc. the surround backs, but it still doesnt show up??!! all the other 5.1 speakers light up... :(:(

I have tried other options, but i am wondering if this is a bug on the 863, as the speakers work but AVR does not light it up...

300 was done in 5.1 so I wonder if that is why your lights don't light up. It is just sending a copy of the surround content to your back speakers.

It's only going to light up 5 speakers and the sub because that's the soundtrack of the movie. The lit speakers do not indicate that sound is coming out, just that it's what it "sees" from the movie. If you were to play a movie with a 7.1 soundtrack, the LBR/RBR would light up.

Sorry guys im still a newb when it comes to the V-863. still learning.

Ok i do understand. I didnt realize that if the movie was 5.1, then it will only show up what the AVR 'sees'

I assumed that if the speakers are properly config'd at 7.1, then the AVR will light up the 7.1 setup on the LED regardless of the sources soundtrack..

I am also a bit cut the PS3 does not bistream the HD signals... to combat this, i renamed one of the "SCENE 1" to display "DTS-HD MA"

Just to add my 2c, i find PIIx to be ALOT better than Dolby EX.. The surround effects on 300 offer more realism and more dynamics. Does anyone also notice this?

Haha. I like this, it's very clever. You'd be surprised how many people buy a player that bitstreams HD audio just to have a little logo light up on their AVR. I don't blame them, because it does look official but I can't justify it. I can live with "PCM" glowing at me.

Haha thanks EJ. you'd be suprised how much better i felt when this displays now.

I love my PS3 for BD playback. I actually bought a Pio BD player, but nothing compares to the PS3's speed of BD handling. i just use the Pio for DVDs.

Oh yeah i just set SCENE 2 as "DOLBY TRUE-HD" :)

I sold my Xbox 360 w/ many games to buy a PS3 and I've yet to play a game on it. Too busy with BD in my Netflix queue.

Likewise. Traded 9 games, 2 controllers for a PS3 60gb for an extra $200. worth it imo.

Only negative opinion is PS3 runs quite warm during use. Compliments my AV gear rack quite well i must admit.

Its a shame Netflix wont be valuable as im living in Australia :(
