I am going to design/purchase and set up a new sound system for my parents house. I consider myself savy when it comes to car audio, but have not dealt much with home audio. What I want to do is have a game room for movies/sporting events for a place to hang out, and have speakers placed throuhout the house for entertainment purposes and just to play music throughout the house. could i do both from just one receiver? what am i looking at? if i could keep everything up in the game room, is there any way to control the volume from another room, across the house? there are a lot of questions in this thread but i need to start somewhere. Thanks for the help

Welcome! The first steps are to lay out some numbers.

What is the overall budget for this project?
How large is the game room?
Is this a new house, or going into an exisitng house?
How many rooms will you be pumping audio into?

there isnt much we can do without the questions mentioned above. but one thing is for sure, i wouldnt recomend a receiver for pumping audio throughout the house, a separate power amp would do a much better job

While there may be other options...

...given the complexity of your plans, you may want to consider systems from Russound or Niles...they are designed for multi-area/remote operation and have sources/amps/switching devices/speakers to accomplish these things.

Receivers/separates? IMO the point is moot, as consumer level (even high-end) gear is really not designed for such applications. Yeah, you could cobble together some mishmash of hardware but...

As noted, some number-crunching and specificity is in order.
