I've looked at the SVS PB10-NSD and the PB12-NSD. The HSU VTF-2 MK 3 would also be an option.
These are all fine choices. Given the preferences you expressed for your own requirements, I would go for the Hsu. I have a Hsu STF-3 and I find it to be a great value for a great performing sub.

One thing about subs, you can turn them down. They don't have to be rumbling and thumping all the time. The real goal is to create a seamless, blended transition from the mains to the sub so that you can't tell where from listening where that transition takes place.

But if you have a bit of extra sub capacity, when the wife goes to visit her sister for the weekend, you can have a cathartic moment with Saving Private Ryan or Transformers without her express written consent.;)

OK, maybe I'll get better help if I clarify my goals a little bit. I'm trying to figure out just how big (and how nice) of a sub to get. The goal really isn't to be able to wake up the neighbors. One episode of the dishes rattling in the cupboard and the whole system might end up out on the curb while I'm at work ;).

I'm currently looking at some Klipsch RF-62's or RF-52's for the L & R. As for the sub, I'm not unable or unwilling to pay for something nice. I just don't need to wake the dead. What I really want is nice clarity, minimal distortion, and faithful sound reproduction at reasonable household volumes. I'm not trying to replicate a rock concert and I don't necessarily need to feel the bass. I would like it to sound "right" though and I'd like a full spectrum of sound.

I've looked at the SVS PB10-NSD and the PB12-NSD. The HSU VTF-2 MK 3 would also be an option. They're priced within my (recently expanded) budget. Together with the rest of the system, would there be enough bass to acheive what I've described above?
what kind of price can you get on the speakers? I was at our local store and they are trying to get rid of some inventory and I can get the rf 82, rc 62, and rs 52's for $1625 or $1150 without the rs 52's. or the rf62, rc 62, and rs 52's for $1500 or without the rs 52's $1025. That seems like a decent deal compared to the price on amazon and either should fill my room which is smaller than yours but I don't really care for the Klipsch sound.

I'd like to thank everyone for their help. Without input from you guys I would have ended up with a much whimpier sub. I went on a little shopping trip yesterday and I have to say movies & music have gone to a whole new level. We watched Cars last night & it's a whole new experience. My 13 yr-old was impressed! My wife went upstairs to another room in a vain attempt to get away. :) :) :) .......... I gotta be careful now......

I ended up getting two Klipsch RF-62 mains and a Klipsch RW-12D sub. Before you all tell me how stupid I am for not going with an SVS or HSU, the local home theater guy gave me what is probably a reasonable deal altogether since it was the ever-so-famous "package deal." I'm obviously enough of a NewB that the finer points are lost on me ;).

I ended up spending:

RC-52 $252
RF-62 $739 for the pair
RW-12d $499

Total $1490 for speakers. Not too bad and within my budget. Maybe I could have done a little better on ebay or audiogon but it's nice to have the local support and full warranties.

Final setup:

LG 50" Plasma (unfortunately only 1080i/720p, but nice enough for now)
Yamaha RX-V765 receiver
Sony BluRay Player
Klipsch as above
RBH in-wall surrounds x2 and rear x2

A month ago it was the TV with its own speakers and a junky DVD player. It's pretty hard not to move up from there but I think I accomplished my goals OK. I went through a variety of CD's last night - organ music, Louis Armstrong, Piano, Def Leppard, Boston Pops stuff. :)

I think thats a great value and great system. From there you can keep all as is and you know its a great sound and your home movie enjoyment went up significantly. If you want you can tweak here and there and make improvements if you want to(wife will allow)
