Harmon/Kardon CDR-20 repair question

I know that Harmon Kardon is known for its weak carriers but the problem is...I found this out after buying the dang thing :( . Well, I still think of it as a very decent player/burner for the $600 I paid for it. Anyhow, I was wondering, is there an easy fix for the left hand carrier? My left side carrier eject button takes at least 5-6 pushes until the motor catches and the door actually opens! There is no problem whatsoever on the right side. Upon opening the top (to blow out dust with compressed air) I noticed a missing screw as well as no protective grill atop that carrier (as the right side had). I sure hope this was no refurb (as I paid for it new in the box at Circuit City). If this seems familiar to anyone, I would love to hear your input as to reputable repair shops to ship to or if it is worth shipping to Harmon/Kardon themselves. If I could have modifications done to the carriers, I would also like to hear more about who could do such a thing.

p.s. I am purchasing an optical out splitter as well as 2 6' fiber optic TOSLINK- optical cables to connect my 2 Roland DS-50 self-powered monitors digitally. Is this an approved practice in the audiophile community or does such an act bear undesireable results? I am thinking of getting some Cambridge Speakers to replace my Rolands since they are only monitors. My father mentioned them and said there have been no complaints from other audiophiles about them. Any thoughts of a good set-up for the CDR-20? Power Amp? Speakers? converter?
