However if the PROTECT message remains then the processor is being told of an internal issue.
If that was in fact the case then I agree with you but we couldn't be sure if he meant the message remained even after he disconnected the speaker wires and went through the reset (power on/off according to you) cycle.

The fact it, the guy is enjoying his system since with no further problem so I really doubt there was any internal issue.:)

As long as everything is now functioning..
No harm no foul.
The protection circuit is very sensitive and any small wire strand on any channel either @ the loudspeaker or AVR rear panel can trigger it.
Case closed..

happend to me 1 time when i'm setting up and connecting my speakers to my hk avr225. I reckon it happens when there's a ground between the connections of your speakers hope it helps
