Harman Kardon and overheating

i was wondering why no one suggested using PC fans.
they're quiet, low power consumption, rated to run 24/7

i thought i had a stupid idea, so i kept the idea to myself (and because i was too lazy to bring them out of the packaging seeing that my receiver hasnt arrived yet)

I was thinking of running 4 fans,

1 on the left blowing air IN
1 on the right blowing air IN
2 on top blowing air OUT

anyway, here are pics when they are running (one with camera flash)
i got one with lights so I would know if they were on.

I have an HK AVR-330 and NEVER have had any problems with overheating or protection. We have had a number of the hooked up in the store and again, no problems. I have also sold many to customers with no problems reported.

The one at the circuit city location, is it hooked to a speaker selector? If so, is the protection turned on? Could a it be that the speaker selector's protection circuit has failed?

The 635 we have on display is a POS as well... It stays on, but it doesn't read Dolby Digital, which is a shame, because that is a pretty popular surround format! /sarcasm.

I've had my fill of HK...

did anything change on the speakers or wiring or set up? i have AVR230 & it does the same thing.
Well, i finally isolated the problem to the woofers on my Alpha 50. Whatever is wrong with them, when i have them powered, i go into protect mode. I figured this out since you can bi-amp the alpha 50's, i tried amping just the tweeter/mid & it worked fine. Then i amped the woofers & PROTECT came on & thats all she wrote. So now, i'm looking for an Infinity service center to get it repaired.

cliffnotes: It wasn't the reciever that was the problem, it was the speaker

I have the 330 also and so far it's performed flawless. I had it cranked up to -5 listening to a SACD last night for about an hour.

I have experienced the same problem at CC when I go "audtioning". Whenever I crank up the volume on a HK rcvr, it shuts itself off. One reason why I went with the Yamaha.

New to forum...

I have an HK 235 and recently moved. I re-wired everything last night and when doing the setup I noticed surrond left was causing the 235 to go into protect mode. For me it boiled down to a bad wire, some moron probably put a nail or something through my wire.

Just thought I'd share, in my case it was something simple. Unfortunately fishing a new wire won't be so simple.

I have an AVR 335 and it did the same thing. I took it to an authorized service shop and they couldn't find anything wrong. Finally, I sent it back (at my cost) to HK and they sent me a refurbished unit. Everything has been fine since. Even though the unit works fine, I wouldn't purchase another HK.

HK made a deal with Future Shop that they would come out with lower end models to sell to the masses. Unfortunately , IMO, this hurt their name more than it helped. I used to think highly of HK. I refuse to buy one now.

On the other hand. Other manufacturers also sell cheaper models. I learned today that Yamaha has some other manufacturer make receivers for them under the Yamaha name. But in essence it's not even close in performance to even thier lowest RXV receiver. It's built to compete with the Sony's, Panasonic's, etc.

I was looking at Denon the other day. On their web page they list models AVR1x06, and so on. Then I go to Circuit City's web page and I find AVRx86s. According to denon's web page those don't exist. It must be the same idea. A cheaper part with their name. People hear Denon, Yamaha, Hk and think it must be good.

I refuse to purchase HT components from electronis stores such as Future Shop, Circuit City, etc. I go to the HT specialty stores. Places that only deal in that area. They sell better components. And I think that most sales people there know what they are talking about. For not much more you can get an awsome system that will out perform anything from the other stores.

And that's all I have to say about that. :D

I've been running a HK AVR235 for a couple of mths, with no protection shutdown problems. However it was extremely hot to the touch and sometimes got a whiff of "new electronic" smell. Their is 7" of space above it, 4" behind it, witch is closed off. My speakers are Athena AS-F2.2 mains, AS-C1.2 center, AS-R1.2 rears.

After I installed a Ashly FET-2000-M amp for my mains, The AVR235 cooled right down.
