Amazon.com: Handel - Messiah / Augér, von Otter, Chance, Crook, Tomlinson, English Concert, Pinnock: George Frideric Handel, Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Trevor Pinnock, The English Concert & Choir, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, John Tomlinson Amazon has it for only 30 bucks. That's definitely on the wish list.

B bikemig Audioholic Chief Dec 4, 2011 #7 Society of Sound Also very good is the recent release by the LSO and Sir Colin Davis: Amazon.com: Handel - Messiah / Gritton, Mingardo, Padmore, Miles, Tenebrae Choir, LSO, Sir Colin Davis [includes DVD]: George Frideric Handel, Colin Davis, London Symphony Orchestra, Susan Gritton, Sara Mingardo, Mark Padmore, Alastair Miles, Tenebra. It is available as well from Bowers and Wilkins Society of Sound which is a subscription service (I believe it runs around $60 a year and $30 for 6 months). You get two CDs a month, one classical and another selected by Peter Gabriel. I'm pretty sure that you get the recordings on the back catalog as well when you join which makes $30 pretty attractive since the CD runs $23 and you will get a fair number of very good classical recordings as well. Downloads are available in 3 formats: 16 bit alac, 16 bit flac, and 24/48 flac.

The LSO is nothing like what Handel had in mind for his forces. The Messiah is from the baroque period. This a period of fast dotted rhythms. The forces need to be nimble and light of foot. This repertoire has now, and for good reason, become the province of early music specialists. The LSO is a fine orchestra much better suited to music of the Romantic and modern era, not early music.

We like Robert Shaw, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on Telarc. It is a pretty traditional Messiah in some ways, particularly the ways the solos are assigned, though not with huge forces, but I prefer it that way. It is available cheaply from Amazon.com and has a good set of soloists in addition to an outstanding chorus. The sound quality is excellent. http://www.amazon.com/Handel-Complete-Oratorio-George-Frideric/dp/B000003CT7/ref=sr_1_7?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1323056989&sr=1-7 I think there are any number of good Messiahs available. I have the old Klemperer recording on LP with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus and stellar soloists: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, soprano; Grace Hoffman, alto; Nicolai Gedda, tenor; and Jerome Hines, bass. Definitely not HIP.
