Parents actually involved with teaching their own children.
Sure....I've met quite a few very bright and well mannered home schooled kids. ;)

Here is what my Mom had to say:

MOM said:
Research substantiates that a student's success is dependent upon- in direct correlation to- the relationship between teacher and student. "They will remember the way you made them feel, not what you said or did."
Relationships are paramount.

If we want children to be successful, part of our charge is to see to it that they are happy and engaged.

Spending an afternoon on a Halloween party/parade (which is incidentally the children's favorite holiday, hands down) is definitely not a waste of time. It is an investment in future positive relationships.

Your principal is way off the mark.

Children are not vessels into which we can pour information.

They are living, breathing, thinking human beings in whom we must trust.

Give them a break. Have them research Halloween, if you must.

They can grow from the experience.
I guess she isn't quite the tree hugger I thought she was.

That's beautiful. Spoken by mom first, then one of your better teachers out there.

Paying them more does nothing. We have been throwing money hand over fist at the education system for years and have seen no results. You’re right, it’s not fair to say that they are selfish and lazy, but life isn't fair. I have heard my mother speak of these teachers, and I have seen them. I would bet that 30% of teachers are selfish and lazy, 25% just don't care, and the other 50% actually give a damn about their job. Society is the problem here, namely the lack of family values. What is the reason for this? An education system run by liberal tree hugging hippies.
I agree with everything except the last line. We are extremely involved with our childrens education, but feel it's like butting our head against the wall sometimes. One daughter social studies teacher that gave her 0 points on the map part of a project, because she put Europe/Asia to the left of North America, everybody knows it belongs to the right. Also gave her zero credit on the route from New York to Tokoyo, because straight line are always shorter then curved lines. I still refer to her as a member of the flat earth society. Long term math teacher who created unsolvable math problems. He actually straightened up his act when I called him to the carpet for his sloppy problems and grading. There's one teacher who probably cares too much and it may burn him out.

There might actually be a few less people with the broken will, worker bee, just leave me alone to pay my taxes, drink, drug, porn, away the pain of life mentality.

The government taking over parental responsibility IS the problem.

IF I ever have kids(I probably will not, they are better off where ever they are now) I would try to send them to a non religous private school. Where I could have a little more choice who infleuences them. Now the school you go to is dictated by the street you live on.

Although I already chip in 2000+ dollars a year to the public schools for my non kids.

If a halloween party is so important just throw the biggest dress up, candy chomping, backyard haunted house party for all the kids, even invite the teachers.

I would not have considered wasting a half day for a halloween party at school in third grade essential to my development.

You need to send a globe and a fabric tape measure in with your child and ask the teacher to illustrate her straight-line theory. This is another part of the problem, people teaching things that they don’t understand.

I am a military man, and run our family in that fashion. My wife doesn’t work; she stays home and takes care of the house. Our children are loving and respectful of their elders. If my wife worked, then I would stay home, clean the house and tow the line. I believe in family values in the strictest sense. I found a woman that has the same beliefs as I. I do not disparage women; I just believe they belong in the home. As far as personal attacks, I never attacked you, just made a comment that is painfully obvious to others.

I'll start this post by agreeing with you and save the personal attack for the end.

A big part of the problem these days is not enough parents stay home to raise their kids. A few of my friends that have children put them into day care only a few weeks/months after being born. Do they really know who is raising their kids?

You are lucky to be able to support your family on a single income. That is far from standard. The government would rather your wife work also so they can tax the crap out of her too. Why in the 1950's dad could bring home the bacon and mom could raise the kid's and they could still have two cars and a single family home in the burbs and an electric mixer in the kitchen? The burdern the government puts on you is probably double or more now than it was back then.

I keep track of my personal finances with Quicken. Witch make reporting things super easy. For the first quarter of this year I paid almost 45% of my income to a government agency of some sort. Federal, State, Medicare, SOS, Property tax, Licence plates, city stickers, sales tax, misc charges on my utilities(line, storage, inspection, etc) thats just the ones I could add up not including the 45+ cents a gallon tax included in the price of gas. The intangible burden passed on in the MSRP for all the things you buy for the tax load on the manufacturer. At my place of employment their are all kinds of nonsense the employer is responsible for. They match dollar for dollar at least the federal income tax. There are vent fan taxes, driveway taxes, capital equiptment permit, and more property taxes. That probably affects what they can pay me.

Now you might be saying "Ironlung why the crazy tangent?". Thats a fair question. I am a quality/techonology manager and a tool and die design/maker and part of being a craftsman is knowing what you can't do.

I CHOOSE to not have children because I feel (with my mid middle class wage) I am not in the financial position to provide for a stay at home mom and send the kid(s) to the schools I choose. That is REQUIRED to even give the kids a fighting chance of being a well adjusted, well educated adult.

Now on to the fun stuff.

G.I. stands for government issue correct? I never want to consider myself the property of someone else like a jeep or tank. A marine friend of mine was injected on several occasions from vials labeled "experimental use only" I sure it was good for him. A show on the history channel about nuclear bomb development, troops were placed just outside a surviveable radius from the bomb "to see what would happen to them".

I am not trying to minimise anyone service to their country. I have utmost respect and concern for thoes that have served in combat but why shoud Americans die because communism is going to spread south of the 38th parellel or Saddam doesn't treat his people nice. Let them fight for themselves.

Nothing is painfully obvious to me but just let me take a wild guess. Your Dad ruled his family with an iron fist also. Your kids are behaved and respectful and the wife "tows the line" OR ELSE! Do you have a son? I bet he is either a bully or bully magnet at school. The daughter will end up marrying an authoritarian also. Like I said just a wild guess. I'm not young enough to know everything. :)

Now back to the Halloween Debate!

You also have to remember that the US Military provides its service(wo)men and their families with FREE healthcare and Houseing, and even some utilities to go with that housing. These are the biggest things commonly overlooked by people when researching what military people actually get paid.

Have you actually priced hosuing lately? And military bases are usally much nicer neighborhoods than you'll find in 90% of the country. So really, the miliary person is just paying for food (at a discounted rate also), clothing, and the car payment. If the 'stay at home' spouse (typically the wife, but there are exceptions) would have to bring in roughly $30,000 a year to afford the same benefits as being a "working mom" in the real world.

I'm confused. I guess you were refering to my previous post without quoting it. After re reading the post it was a little harsh. Like I said, it was a wild guess from context of previous posts on this site. I don't know him personally at all.

If you start at post #46 the personal attacks did not start flying with me.

Since I am looking like the bad guy I'll offer an olive branch. I generally like Mac's posts. Usually informative, especially the SVS visit thread from him and I believe Buckeye. I will probably end up with an SVS myself. I will try to be more civil in the future as long as others can do the same.
