Hey Guys, I have a chance to buy 2 very old school amps hafler made for the cinema industry. These are mono amps at 120watt @ 8ohm. I want to use them as one per channel in a 2 channel stereo , what type of preamp is needed for this set up? trying to keep my set up old school solid state, also the website manual says " Booth processing equip or preamps have low impedance output of 600ohm or less ". Can I use these amps for what Im trying to do? or is special audio equip required to use these. Please adivse before spending money.. Thanks a bunch.

If you are going to use a Hafler pre/amp the DH-110 with the DH-112 MC SUT inside is a good sounding pre/amp there are re-cap kits on that auction site. Go to Musical Concepts and ask if they service the Cinema Series before you spend your money. The DH-220 and P3000 Hafler MOSFET amps are more common and the P3000 rated at 150X2 or 400 watts mono from the late 1990's mates with most pre/amps. Hafler DH 220 DH 500 P 225 P 230 PC 19 Repair Kit | eBay contact this seller as he was a Hafler/Dynaco Engineer and he has some amps he has restored for sale. Hafler DH 200 Factory Spec Certified Power Amplifier Refubished Gold Connectors | eBay no affiliation to this seller just posting some Hafler info I found as they sell kits for my DH-110 pre/amp that their better pre/amps. Ask your questions to this seller as he helped design them back then.

LAB3 ... Thank you kindly for this information, I will contact him today. The 2 cinema amps I'm looking at are in mint condition and are working fine, but I still want to go through them no doubt. I've heard these amp are solid, with oversized toroid, and oversized bridg rectifiers. I still have a question, will these amps work in home audio with the hafler pre? I'm just concerned that they will need that 600 ohm input like cinema booth processors and preamps have, according to the amps web maual. Thanks again..

I use one of my Hafler MOSFET amps with my Yamaha HD AVR as they run my fronts in my 5.2 HT. Hafler - Product Details my P3000 needs 620Mv to 3.5 volts from a pre/amp to operate them. My Yamaha AVR has 1 volt going to it. Sometimes I play CD's thru my PS3 and listen to music and I can't tell much difference from my other P3000 with my Hafler DH-110 pre/amp with a CD player to my Klipsch Cornwalls.(my fronts) I use a Niles Audio splitter box to use two different amps for my analog system to the same speakers. SPK-1 SPK-1 | Switching Systems | Niles Audio If these amps have not been setting dormant for years they should last a long time without needing anything. I purchased one of my P3000 that was still new in a box that had never been opened and it worked great for a week and the power caps went bad.I needed a "variac" to bring up all the PCB's slowly as hard starts will cause a failure like what happened to me. A common problem with any amp that has NOT been used for 15 years as non use will ruin caps etc from not having power to it. Never purchase a amp, R2R etc that has not been used periodically. I got a deal on it ($200.00 shipped)and I gambled and lost but I figured it was a crap shoot. I now have about $400.00 in a like new P3000. After this happened I have a older 2004 Yamaha AVR (non HDMI) in it's box in my closet that has set for 4 years and it had to be re-set and run in diagnostic mode for a day before it would turn off and on and operate normal again so I have it installed in the spare bedroom and play it once a week now. It's my back up if my HD AVR fails I can still jam movies. If any pre/amp or pre pro has at least 620 mV or 5/8 of a amp it will run the amp. It's the 620mV or LESS you posted that made me wonder if too much voltage is a problem. What series Hafler are you looking at???

Hi LAB3, well I wish I knew that answer.. These amps were made by hafler for a company called SMART Theatre devices. The models on smarts site TA240/TA120 they went out of business awhile back. All the manuals are still on PDF on there site. They look just like the some of the older Pro series models. I will take your advice on the amps,i do want to recap before put in solid use, these are in beautiful condition, I tried to contact the guy on ebay that has all the dyanco/hafler parts but he hasn't responded to me yet, I hope he does,if he worked for Hafler he would would know these amps.Oh I did find a dh110 preamp on ebay last night. Thank you so much for your time.

I looked for several weeks on Ebay before I found a DH-110 with rack ears so I could mount it several spaces below the amps and I installed fans to help keep everything cooled down.
I read up on all the Hafler pre/amps the the 110 seems to be one of the better one's. The 101 is older and would need new caps for sure. The 100 is a smaller chassis and not very good for vinyl. Pass on the IRIS has they were made after David Hafler passed away IIRC and they were not very musical for vinyl. If you can find a 101 with the 102 MC SUT (rare) and have it recapped. Same for the 110 with the hard to find internal 112 MC SUT. If $$ is not a problem a Crown SL2 pre/amp is hard to beat for vinyl in the $500.00 price range. And the crown PL3/4 amps are very reliable but expensive.
