Got the Oppo DVD player, not too impressed.

The upconverted picture (720p) from my new Oppo dvd player, hooked up via DVI to HDMI cable to my Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver to my Samsung DLP HL-R5067W display doesn't really look that much better than my other Panasonic DVD-S35 DVD player connected via component outputting 480i since the receiver does a better job of deinterlacing that the dvd player, could this be because the TV scales everything to 720p anyway and that's why the Oppo doesn't look much better to me? I would hate to have spent almost $200 on a new DVD player that I really didn't need to begin with when the picture isn't really that much better, if any better at all. Or could it be that I just don't have certain settings turned on that I need? I have trulife set to on, and everything else set to off, and all the other settings for video are set to defalult. I have the latest March 15 2006 firmware as well. Any suggestions? The picture is good, but it's just not what I was expecting, I know it won't turn the dvd's into normal high def quality, but I was expecting it to look at least a little better than it does. Don't get me wrong though, it is a great picture and the colors are vivid and the picture is sharp, but maybe my other dvd player does a really great job as well and that's why I don't see much of a difference.

You shouldn't expect the picture to be much better unless there is a drastic difference in the deinterlacing and/or scaling capabilities of the various components. No doubt the TV is the best of them all.

Simply taking a low resolution image and deinterlacing and scaling it will not turn the image into high resolution any more than blowing up a 4x6 picture to 8x11 will make the image better.

I thought most people buy the oppo because of it's compatibility with various media and avi/divx etc compared to most DVD players. Still a nice peice IMO.

Maybe it's because you're used to your Panny, and Panny makes some great dvd players. Go pick up a cheap $25 unit at Wally World or BB, and then you'll feel better.

Did you recalibrate your display? If you don't, it will tend to look more or less similar with the same settings because you aren't taking advantage of the new player's abilities. Just a thought.

The receiver is doing the deinterlacing? That doesn't sound correct.

I bought an oppo also. It has had some problem and still has some flaws but MAN its far far better than my Sony DVD player. Im really happy with it overall.

the differance between the oppo not being calibrated when you first plug it in and veiwing a dvd and calibrating it then viewing a dvd is like going from non HD to HD quality picture.

in the setup you have to tell it your using DVI for it to shine.
otherwise it will just output just like any other dvd player.

im also assuming you told it to upconvert to 720p, it doesnt do it automatically.
i actually just flipped through the upconvert settings till i found the clearest one.
ive noticed differnt devices work better on differnt resolutions. my satelite box works better on 1080i. the oppo looks best at 720p for me.

J Garcia, the receiver is doing the deinterlacing for the Panasonic DVD player, not the Oppo, the receiver is deinterlacing and upconverting to HDMI. I've let the panny output progressive scan, and the receiver does a better job of deinterlacing.

Yes, the oppo is set to Video 2, which is DVI output only, and yes it's set to output 720p. Maybe I just need to recalibrate the display again with my Avia disc. I'd rather just keep the oppo outputting at 720p so my display won't have to rescale the image back to 720p from 1080i, as it seems too much scaling won't be good for the picture.

What about the noise reduction, and the css settings, what should those be set to? And I'm guessing when I do the calbration with Avia, I should adjust the tv settings, not the DVD players video settings, is this correct?

I wish this weren't the case, but Sony's DVD players leave much to be desired... the one's I've tested do not pass blacker than black, have very poor deinterlacing capability and have bizarre setup menus to boot...

i turned CSS and true life and those other options in that section to OFF

just for giggles hook your OPPO directly to your TV and set it to output at 720P

im guessing your hooking everything up via hdmi through your yamaha.
adjust your other things like your cable\satelite box with your tv's settings first them calibrate your oppo using its settings.

im my case i had to adjust settings on the oppo and my tv to get the best results. the oppo and my tv had some adjustments that the other didnt have. I was able to eliminate all color push and My blacks are so dark on letter box movies you cant tell where black ends and the letterbox begins. It looks awsome.

i havent noticed the macroblocking issue anymore with the new oppo updates, If you get a chance to re review one it may be worth while.
the subtitles suck, their very jagged and blocky and a few new features for the sound setup have been added.

The receiver just acts as a repeater for the HDMI, hooking the OPPO straight to the tv shouldn't make the picture look any different.

What should I have noise reduction set to, or should I just turn it off?

And I must say that since the Oppo has 5.1 analog outputs, that it should be able to play SACD, but it doesn't, and for $200 it ought to at least be able to play .mp3's but it won't do that either. My $100 panny at least plays .mp3's and it does a fantastic job with the menu system for the .mp3 discs to boot.

something is wrong then
it plays mp3 dvd-A, which is the analog 5.1 outs, divx, xvid and a few other formats.
i use my player heavily for audio with mp3s and dvd-a and it works great.
i use the optical out for most music and movies and the analog 5.1 outs for DVD-A

turn the noise reduction to off.

I had put one of my .mp3 discs in and it didn't do anything, maybe I just need to try again, and i don't have any DVD-A discs, so at this point I'm not too worried about hooking up the analog 5.1 outputs. I'll have to look at the noise reduction to see what it's set on. But my panny plays the .mp3 discs just fine, and I'll probably just use it for my .mp3's since I love the way it's menu system is for them, and I have both players hooked up.

Does anyone know what the remote code is for the Oppo player so I can program my Yamaha RX-V1600 remote without having to use it's learn functions?

Ok, after adjusting the video settings using Avia, and watching a couple more dvd's, I've come to the conclusion that it's a little better than I previosly made it out to be. I'm pretty happy with it, and I think I will keep it.

they offer the remote code on their website.
i also notice they have another update that should be coming out soon.

I have noticed a problem with the oppo when playing finding nemo
on some of the fast swimming scenes i will get some blur and occasionally a few scenes with a bit of a glow/outline around Marlin (dad clown fish) and Dorry (the blue fish)

i have a 2 year old so this movie gets alot of milage.

Make sure you're outputting 720p from the Oppo. Hit the DVI button on the lower left of remote to cycle through......

Yes, I already did that the day I got it. I think part of my problem is that my tv is 50" and I'm sitting about 9 ft. from the display, and that is ok, but if I were a few more feet away I think the picture would look a bit better. But I have no choice as my bedroom is pretty small.

I'm personally shocked that some no-name doorstop failed to impress.
