I guess I want the scaling for convenience of having one cable going to the TV. I guess i'm having a hard time cause I have heard good things about both. the Denon is rated at less power per channel than the Onkyo. Also the Onkyo is supposed to have a better video chip and can also be had for $400 less than the Denon.

So what do you guys think? Denon 3808 or Onkyo 876 or 906. Like I said the Denon is now $400 more then the 876 and I've heard the 876 has a better video chipset. I did listen to the Denon last night at a Magnolia Center and it sounded great!

I would call it a toss up if they both have everything you need. In a toos up situation, I would go for the least expensive one.

All that being said, the 3808 is awesome and I have become a big Denon fan and will probably stay with them from here on out.

First, congrats on your new speakers!

I also vote for the Denon 3808, but please don't pay anymore than $1K + tax!:D

Just out of curiosity, what did you compare those Definitive speakers to before buying?

The problem with the Silicon Optix Reon (& Realta) Video Chip is that it produces a lot of heat. That is why the Denon 5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI have special heat sinks just for those Realta video chips.

From what I've heard, Onkyo did not use any heat sinks for the Reon chip. Thus, it resulted in a tremendous amount of heat. I don't know about the newer Onkyo models, however.

Consider Marantz 8002 --It does have upconversion!

Another vote for the Denon.

I am currently looking at it and the Marantz 8002. The Marantz lacks the up-conversion you are looking for in your video though. That is a feature I don't need.

It's all about what you need, and I feel the Denon is your best bet.

Refurb purchase option. One year warranty.

OP you might want to consider the Marantz 8002; it does an excellent job of up conversion. I even have an old VHS player and it upconverts it very nicely to HDMI 1080i output.

The Marantz also drives Def Tech speakers very nice for both music and video HT

Well if it is a toss up the Onkyo is $400 cheaper. Where can I get the 3808 for less than 1k?

I listened to a buddys system with Def Tech, he also works for definitive and I got all of the them 60% of retail.

Like I said I did listen to a 3808 at Mag Center with my speaker running. I thought it sounded great but that is compared to my 16 year old 200watt Kenwood.

I have been trying to find a shop who sells the Onkyo 876 but nothing close only a circuit city and they do not carry that model. I would like to listen to it before I buy it.

Zumbo thanks for Marantz sr8002 upconvert specs

Zumbo,

Thanks I rechecked you are correct! Looks like the SR8002 has pretty poor upconversion  . I have all HDMI 1080i in and 1080i out and am not doing any upconversion so I didn't realize until I went back and reread the manual. Anyway it does convert VHS to HMDI output, but I guess it is at 480p LOL.

This is awesome:rolleyes: Four pages of video upconversion worry and just look at the op's sources and display;) IMO no video processing should be applied.

Where can I get the 3808 for less than 1k?
I believe both ParadigmDawg and ChopinGuy got the 3808 for $1K @ Best Buy. Just tell them to price match. I don't remember the store#, so you can send them a Private Message to learn more.

Band- with video a side have you heard both receivers? If so what do you think? 3808 or 876? Like I said before the 876 can be had for $400 less than the 3808.

Strictly audio is one better then the other? I dont know of a Onkyo dealer close to sample it.

Are you trying to order online or in person? For the Denon here is what you do- go to 6ave.com and get their phone number, and call- you have to call them for best price, they will not give it out online, even in live chat. Ask them what their price is for avsforum members. Last month it was $1099 with free shipping.

If you want locally, verify that price by calling, then go to your nearest Best Buy or dealer with the 3808, and ask them if they will price match an authorized dealer who is selling it for $1099 on phone-in orders (do not mention them as a website). YMMV, but it worked for me.

I've got a buddy who bought the 3808 about 8 months ago. I now wants to go to separates and offered to sell it to me for $1100.00. Does that sound like a good deal? It is in like new condition.

I meant to say he wants to go to separates and that is why he is selling the 3808.

So you think $1,100 is good for a 8month old 3808, I guess he said he hasnt used it for 3 months.

I would say no, that is not a good deal. In my post above you can buy a brand new one for $1099 if their price hasn't changed in the last couple of weeks. Depending on where you live there may be no tax and no shipping either. If you buy your friends will you still have a warranty? Usually manufacturer warranty's are not transferable. The 3808 will come with a 2 year warranty new. You could also buy a refurbished on here for $979 plus shipping, and has a 1 year warranty-

I don't think I'd pay over $1000 for a used one, if it was me.

I was going to ask him if he would sell it to me for 1K but it is a little weird cutting down a buddy.
