Here is the complete list of projectors from $1-$3,000 currently available. I wouldn't say any of these are lousy, but the ones I listed are what are likely to get a fair bit of attention, or have already. If I were to buy today, right now, I would get the Epson 6500UB.

If I were buying I'd go with the HD20 PJ technology is constantly improving and I prefer DLP. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones BMX listed for sure.

I believe a good screen should get at least half the budget since that's what your likely to keep. Invest in what lasts.

Still I won't stop going to the theaters. Studio Movie Grill is my favorite place to go. You get drinks, food, and a movie. Makes for a great date and I'm currently addicted to the stuffed potato skins and popcorn their.

Make sure you schedule a Super Bowl party if you get a PJ. Any PJ will make football way better. Even my old cheap non-HD one makes football fantastic.

Wow! That Optoma HD20 looks like quite an upgrade over my 720p Sanyo Z4. That at half the price I paid for the Z-4.

Well it's not entirely. It's not flexible for placement options. But DLP looks better to my eyes. Plus you can use the DLP commercial lines. It's amazing it must be the mirrors.

one issue i don't see addressed much = noise.

i have yet to deside on my first PJ. but, no matter the video quality, it must be quiet ! mine will be mounted right above me. i don't want to hear it !!! i understand the dlp's are out, for me.

Honestly the noise doesn't bother me, but some folks hate fan noise.

The http://www.projectorcentral.com/Sanyo-PLV-Z3000.htm is probably the quietest projector out there.

I suggest a Carada Brilliant white screen in a light controlled room.

Something to consider - which most people don't.

The fans on projectors are not pointed down - they are pointed forward, backward, or to the side. This means that the quietest location to sit, in relation to a projector, is directly above or below the case.

Most people say exactly what you did: It'll be right above me.

But, they fail to realize that for sound, this is really one of the best locations you can be sitting in.

About the best thing you can do is get it as far away from your head as possible and to keep it as close to directly overhead as possible. You can always consider a hush box if you want, but they tend to be difficult to build and often don't integrate into the space you are in.

But, overhead is THE place for the projector to be.

Don't forget to look for reviews on different projectors and seek out the noise of them. Most projectors, these days, are fairly quiet.

It's flexible enough for my set up. I'd just need to move it forward 1-2 feet. The next support is 16" forward so that works out just fine. The cables will even still reach. I might even be able to get away with using the 1.5' HDMI cable instead of the 3' one I an using now.

Hmmm.... I'm thinking that the Sanyo I have now would look great in my daughter's room. Still have an extra screen too.

I have a Mits HC6500 and it's as quiet as a deer fart in the woods. You ever heard one those? That's what I thought. It throws a great pic too. I had an Optoma HD80 and wasn't as pleased with that. It was loud, hot, and loud. It was pretty loud too.

Sure as hell did and I was nearly knocked out. It was like a sonic boom.

At the 3k mark , I'm surprised no one mentioned the JVC RS10/HD350 which will pretty much blow anything listed away. You're just shy of it at around 3300-3500 depending on where you shop. If you have no room to play with then the Epson 6500UB would be my next choice.

If we were just talking about noise, the Panasonic PT-AE3000U was almost completely silent when high altitude mode was off, and when it was on it was still the quietest projector I have ever worked with.

The deer farts in my neck of the woods produce something like 110db at 20hz!:D

Heat

I picked up a 6500UB recently. It sits just over my shoulder on a table for the moment and I can't say that I've noticed the noise. One thing that I do notice is the heat though. That sucker heats up the whole room. Luckily it's in a room that tends to be cooler than the rest of the house so it's a bonus in my situation. Something to consider though.

Panasonic PT-AE3000 is now down to $2K. It used to be closer to $3K.

That leaves $1K for a nice screen.
