Hi everyone, first post. I have a question.

I have been shopping and researching for a new receiver for the last couple of months, much to the dismay of my wife. But hey, live a little right?

Anyway I have been looking at a Denon 2105 and several different Yamahas in various price ranges. With $700 being my definate max!! One feature that I think I really want is component video conversion (?). The thought of never having to toggle that input switch for the tv really excites me. Last week I ran into a a RX-V2300 from Yamaha for $749 from an authorized retailer. I asked for better deal and the salesman was able to lower it to $700 bucks. Is this a good deal? I know it listed for about $999 originally.

I don't think it has the component up-conversion but it was still an intriguing piece. I think if I bought it I might just stare at it for a few days. :)

Go to the Yamaha website and check out the specs on all their receivers. They have the RX-V2300 listed, so you can compare it with the newer receivers. It's an older model, so a discount of 30% isn't unheard of, though you may be able to get it for less. For a little more than your offer, you can get a new RX-V1500, so shop around.

I'd think you could do better than that. You can get a RX-V2500 for less than $ 800...

I believe the 2300 is a two year old model. 700 bucks, IMO, is still too much.
With a little haggling at the right place you should be able to get the 1500 for less than that. I don't think you can touch the 2500 for $700 and still get the warranty.
Although I don't have any first hand experience with the Denon you're looking at, it sounds like a nice reciever. It's a matter of preference between it and the Yamaha 1500. They are pretty much comparable to each other.

i was looking at the 1905 and 2105 and 3 months later BAM!!! I got a Yami v2500... so much for trying to keep it under $700 for me... haha

i think the onkyo 601 is a pretty good AVR too around the same price.

If you can get a 1500 w/ warantee for the $700 pricetag I would go for that over the Denon 2105, but if ya want to spend a little extra the denon 2805 is a good choice.

I looked at my purchace as an investment because once I bought it I wouldn't be upgrading for a log time, so spending a few extra $$$ for me was worth it. I have way more receiver than I need right now, but in the future I plan on upgrading everything else and just keep the reciever.

going w/ the yami 1500 or denon 2805 is nice because they have the auto setup which I don't think receivers below them have that feature.

I think buying a receiver is like buying RAM - figure out how much you can afford, and then bump it up a notch. It holds off upgrade-itis.
