For me, what is good for music is always good for HT. The reverse isn't always true. I have a system that's excellent for music for which I can just go Stereo Mode thereby bypassing the surround processors and speakers. Ofcourse having separate set-ups is just as good, though you'd need another investment for that.
I consider Harman Kardon, Rotel and Onkyo receivers excellent for musical reproduction. Especially their flagship models. In a small room, those slim, highly detailed and dynamic Mordaunt-short speakers, expecially the MS912 and MS914 to be excellent mates. Just my 2 cents.
