There are several bookshelf speakers on the market to these days. They all come in different sizes and shapes, they have different characteristics, different purposes, different capabilities and, of course, different prices. While they all may look alike in terms of shape, GoldeEar's Aon 2 & 3 Bookshelf Speakers are definitely something different. These speakers have been out for some time now, and I thought they deserved a dedicated overview so, I'm going to concentrate this overview on the newer version (the Aon 3).
This speaker features GoldenEar’s High-Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR) tweeter combined to their 7" high-definition midrange-woofer which features a cast basket and GoldenEar’s unique-looking Multi-Vaned Phase Plug (MVPP). All of them have been coupled to two 8" inertically-balanced, side-mounted low frequency passive radiators in charge of moving impressive amounts of air for a speaker its size.
The following picture shows the HVFR tweeter found in both Aon speakers which is the same tweeter found in GoldenEar’s top-of-the-range Triton speakers.
Both Aon speakers feature GoldenEar's cast-basket bass/midrange drivers with technology from the midrange units found in their Tritons. (See picture below)
As I said earlier, low frequencies are handled by two side-mounted planar low-frequency radiators. Check out the following picture to see the inside design of this interesting speaker.
The pyramidal shape on this speaker makes it very appealing and interesting at the same time which, in my opinion, is what sets them apart from most speakers. While I haven't heard these babies in action, I can say that I have heard other models from this company and I have been impressed by their sound, so I have little doubt (almost none) that the Aon 3 are very capable little "monsters".
