Going nuts with SP908

Hi every one.
Received my 908 unit about 1 month ago and everything works great.
I have just but just one problem, and hoping that someone can assist.
My System
My signal coming in is 1080i through verizon dvr.
HDMI cable from dvr to 605 imput 2
HDMI cable from dvd player to HDMI 1 on 605
Samsung 50 inch dlp-led to Moniter out on 605.
Everything passes through the receiver at 1080i except when playing dvd movie. It is then at 480p. I have tried severl times to bring it up a notch but sound and video go in and out. Called Onkyo support and we went through numerous settings including resetting both the receiver and dvd player. If i hooked the dvd player directly to the HDMI port on the tv, i am able to put the setting on 1080p with no problem. In: short he suggested that the problem was in the receiver.I called 6ave, where i purchased and after an hour complaining with the sales rep he broke down another 908 unit and swapped the receiver.
The same problem exist.
can anyone put some light on this.

Does your Onkyo upscale? It is usually best to have the TV do the upscaling. Usually this only happens with digital connection. What connection are you making from the Onkyo to the TV?

Using HDMI from dvd to tv.
The tv has full 1080p support.
I am able to go directly into the settings of the onkly dvd player and set it up at 1080p and works great. I only have a problem when going through the 605 receiver. I have to keep the setting at 480p or I will losse sound and the video goes in and out. I am using standard Monster HDMI cables, I might switch to the 1.3 HDMI cables? Dont know.

Can I assume the DVD player is of the Hi-rez (Blu-ray or HD-DVD) variety or perhaps an upscaling type which only outputs the upconverted signal via HDMI?

That's the onlty real reaso to insist on HDMI for technical reasons. Otherwise, component can handle anything up to 1080i and that, along with optical/coaxial sound connections can simplify life greatly.

What is your connection from the receiver to TV? It is best to let the TV do the upscaling. So you need to connect the receiver to the TV with a good HDMI cable.

It is possible there is a HDCP compliance hand shake issue here. I would say that if everything works fine with your DVD player connected directly to you TV, but not going through the receiver with HDMI interconnect, then this is likely your problem.

In that case your best option is to purchase an HDMI switcher the has fully HDCP compliant repeater architecture. You will have to switch audio and video separately. Your other alternative is a new receiver with fully compliant HDCP repeater architecture.

According to onkyo tech support, what ever signal going in to the receiver would come out the other end. Up scaling is done through the DVD player that came with the system. I am not able to post a link yet. but my system is at onkyo under home theater systems SP908

I hope it goes now, thankyou for trying to help me with this problem. Its weird all the equipment is contained in one box, marked home theater in a box for 999.00 and you would think that everything would work fine together.

That equipment is on the bleeding edge to an extent. It says it passes the new DTS HD and Dolby True HD. It does not say it can decode them however. To pass these signals the cables have to be HDMI 1.3 as the bandwidth of the signal is greater.

If past experience with HDMI is a guide, there will be bugs in the new standards. May be you are one of the first to find out.

I would still have the TV do the up conversion, not the DVD player. When playing HD discs it should output at 1080i and there should be no need for an up conversion.

I do know that the unsatisfactory Hollywood crowd are so paranoid about piracy, that these new DRM codes, including those in HDCP, direct down coding to 480i at the "drop of a hat." If everything is truly HDMI 1.3 and fully HDCP compliant, if it does not work, then this is likely the issue, but you try and get anyone to admit it!

Thanks for all of your help, Was thinking about the 1.3 cables, but spent a small fortune on the monster cables. I guess the only way to find out, I have to take the red pill!!
Will try to pick up them cables today. will let you know.

Just an update, purchased monster advanced HDMI 1000 cables, but no good. 100.00 each. Will bring them back to sixth avenue to night and search for HDMI 1.3 cables.
