According to this link, which is similar to the Reuter's article, the FDA basically sat on their hands when the Abbot plant shut down and whatever investigation happened was slowed by inertia in both- while the bacteria wasn't found in the areas where the formula was made, it was found in the plant.

From the article,

"The company halted production while Food and Drug Administration inspectors conducted a six-week investigation of the plant."

"Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., reported last month that a whistleblower had contacted the FDA in October with allegations about unsafe conditions and practices at the plant, including falsifying plant records and failing to properly test formula for contamination. She said the FDA did not interview the whistleblower until late December. Califf is scheduled to answer questions from DeLauro and other lawmakers on Thursday."

Further to your point on the FDA, the following is a transcript from Don Lemon Tonight, Thursday show, featuring Jason Furman, who was Obama's Chair of Economic Advisors. Also served under Clinton and Is currently at Harvard. So it happened, learn from the mistakes, and solve the problem.

“There are so many different failures of government policy, many of them at the FDA.” And that “The problem is the FDA. There’s a lot more they could do that they’re still not doing.”

“There are so many different failures of government policy, many of them at the FDA. They layer it on top of a long set of policies.”

“We’re going to see that plant that the FDA ordered off-line coming back online in the next week or two. We are seeing these shipments from overseas. The administration has invoked the Defense Production Act to make sure that some of the key ingredients are being prioritized for baby formula over everything else. None of this though, none of these steps will work instantly.”

“I certainly think there could have been some earlier action here, but we’re seeing some very decisive action now, as much as the president can do. The problem is the FDA. There’s a lot more they could do that they’re still not doing.”

And they certainly don't run the government as if it were a business.
To be totally accurate, the government makes one particular product that most don't really think about but it controls most of our activities and time. It's more widespread in the economy than oil based products. Chances are we all have some in our pocket now. If you're married, chances are your wife controls it anyway and if she divorces us she takes half of it......It's money. (yes the Fed controls money supply but if you think the Fed is independent well that's another bridge to sell.) The government also produces fiscal deficits. Just like my wife.

A nice article about the leaked Supreme Court preliminary opinion by the author of The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood. Well worth reading.

Several interesting historic points about women and ends with:

>>>… If Justice Alito wants you to be governed by the laws of the 17th century, you should take a close look at that century. Is that when you want to live?<<<

Interesting article. Atwood is an interesting author. I remember reading the Handmaid's Tale just after it was published and also saw the movie version in the late 80s starring the beautiful Natasha Richardson, RIP.

I remember reading an interview with her where she said wrote the book right after a trip to Afghanistan in the early 80s in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. During her stay, she had to wear a chador and was restricted from walking freely in public along with many other activities she had no rights to do as a woman. Kind of like in the 7th century.

Agree with you the government is not a business per se but only in the sense of a "manufacturing" business.
No. In the sense of any business. Business exist to make a profit. Government is not about profit.

There are public and private companies that specialize in safety measures and just about everything the government bureaucracies do. The question becomes who would do a better job and find a balance between government supervision and services provided.
Government is who has authority to enforce laws. The only reason that supervision and regulation is needed on the private sector by government is always because of private sector abuses.

My "return on equity" IRS comment addressed an earlier comment on the IRS making money. Even though a government is not a business per se, there should be audits performed by outside parties. Audits are not to measure profitability, they are to determine compliance and transparency which is needed.
The IRS isn't supposed to make money, it's supposed to collect revenue owed to the government and it is the IRS which has the statutory authority to audit. Audits by the IRS are performed to ensure compliance with tax law, they are not performed to provide transparency of any kind unless an audit finds criminality which in that case transparency is only a result of legal proceedings resulting from egregious activity.

Idealism isn't reality.

Government is not about profit but unfortunately most politicians are. They use government and/or access to power to gain for themselves or their supporters that's profit. Private sector abuses certainly, but are there no government abuses? Ask anyone who has lived under any totalitarian system about those abuses. If you can turn the IRS job description as described back on the politicians and by extension the government than maybe we'd have a better system.
That's reality.

Well, yes, they collect money. With half the staff they would collect way less. More auditors/staff, collection increases. So, income to government is more. :)

  • Physician and Hospital Requirements: 36 states require an abortion to be performed by a licensed physician. 19 states require an abortion to be performed in a hospital after a specified point in the pregnancy, and 17 states require the involvement of a second physician after a specified point.
  • Gestational Limits: 43 states prohibit abortions after a specified point in pregnancy, with some exceptions provided. The allowable circumstances are generally when an abortion is necessary to protect the patient's life or health.
  • “Partial-Birth” Abortion: 21 states have laws in effect that prohibit “partial-birth” abortion. 3 of these laws apply only to postviability abortions.
  • Public Funding: 16 states use their own funds to pay for all or most medically necessary abortions for Medicaid enrollees in the state. 33 states and the District of Columbia prohibit the use of state funds except in those cases when federal funds are available: where the patient's life is in danger or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. In defiance of federal requirements, South Dakota limits funding to cases of life endangerment only.
  • Coverage by Private Insurance: 12 states restrict coverage of abortion in private insurance plans, most often limiting coverage only to when the patient's life would be endangered if the pregnancy were carried to term. Most states allow the purchase of additional abortion coverage at an additional cost.
  • Refusal: 45 states allow individual health care providers to refuse to participate in an abortion. 42 states allow institutions to refuse to perform abortions, 16 of which limit refusal to private or religious institutions.
  • State-Mandated Counseling: 18 states mandate that individuals be given counseling before an abortion that includes information on at least one of the following: the purported link between abortion and breast cancer (5 states), the ability of a fetus to feel pain (13 states) or long-term mental health consequences for the patient (8 states).
  • Waiting Periods: 25 states require a person seeking an abortion to wait a specified period of time, usually 24 hours, between when they receive counseling and the procedure is performed. 12 of these states have laws that effectively require the patient make two separate trips to the clinic to obtain the procedure.
  • Parental Involvement: 37 states require some type of parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. 27 states require one or both parents to consent to the procedure, while 10 require that one or both parents be notified.

Oh boy. Wait till such and such politician gets caught exercising above the law to assist their pregnant daughter.

Charging them for homicide seems like it could only seriously apply to late-term abortions and repeat offenders. The rest of it can be filed in the Don't ask, don't tell category.

If you know of someone who is going to have an abortion, report it!' type of scenario is unrealistic. What, bring them to court for not being a whistleblower???

Well, masturbation will be on the rise.:)

A Michigan Republican said if she wins she'll try and ban the pill because pro-creation is for when you're married. Naturally the question isn't asked what happens if they're done pro-creating.

You can call it 'profit' if you want, but it's not the same as if they were running a business because they would need to consider their costs of doing business in order to determine the profit. This is greed and graft, possibly of a criminal nature. It needs to stop.

You're all over the map. I don't care about totalitarian systems, I do care that our system doesn't become totalitarian. You seem to confuse reality with ideals.

The map I use fairly simple, it is the avoidance of concentrations of power, whether government or corporate or the religion for that matter. All of these are run by people. People are prone to corruption. More so when power is concentrated centrally and there are weak checks and balances. Government officials should be held to the same standards as private citizens. The reality is any country is going down the totalitarian track if the government grows too large.

The hell that's about to be unleashed by these states will be unprecedented. It's only really going to affect the poor woman of these states for the most part. It's going to be a very sad chapter in history but hey if you are anti-abortion you are gonna get exactly what you wished for. Mark my words, contraception, at least some forms will be banned also. What the hell is to stop Ala-fuckin-bama from doing just that?
