Technically....that is possible. The ACLU has completely ignored the 2nd amendment and our right to bear arms.
The ACLU position, as they call it, is "Gun Neutrality"......LOL When it comes to 2nd Amendment rights....... the ACLU is absolutely silent. A bit hypocritical, don't you think?
My point was more properly that you need at least some people on the extremes of many issues. If you don't have the extreme factions it may be more likely to slowly erode rights in certain areas.
The extreme people tend to at least raise the issue though so people can give the case consideration.

For me, maybe not others, I do accept your point that the ACLU isn't going to be first in line to protect my gun rights. That wasn't the point that I was trying to make but none-the-less your counter point does have some validity.
