It reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer gets Marge a bowling ball for her birthday

.....one Christmas after their kids had grown up and moved out, one of my uncles bought my aunt a shotgun and four boxes of shells, and she bought him a set of dishes and a hundred dollar bottle of perfume....the whole family still laughs about it.....

The easiest way to not screw these things up, is ask them what they want, and get it. Screw suprising them, they will be happier with what they want, then getting something unexpected.
