Getting the cops called on you....

Hi All,

Just got another visit from my friendly Policeman Sgt. Dave (yes, we're on a first name basis) because my music was too loud. This is my 3rd time talking to him. I live in an apartment, so I have quite a few neighbours.I've also recently recieved a letter from the owners saying they've gotten a couple complaints. I suppose it's a side effect of loving loud, and excellent sounding music/movies. :D:D

I really need a house in the boonies! Anyone else have similar problems???

When I lived in an apartment I had problems with people like you. :)

My upstairs neighbor always had the TV turned up so loud that it echoed in my living room. That however is far worse than loud music that actually sounds good.

Kinda. I lived next to one of your loud-a** brothers-in-arms. :D Apartment living is not great for listening to loud stuff, for sure, unless you get along with or hate your neighbors. My neighbors and I didn't get along so much as have a mutual disrespect and a tit-for-tat relationship. Silverlining is that I got to enjoy my system from time to time. I'm in a house now, though, which is fantastic.

EDIT: Aw, MDS beat me to it. Quick on the draw, that one. :)

I wouldn't mind if these people would come knock on my door and tell me I'm too loud, but they just complain or call the cops. I try to play it when they aren't home, but I swear some of these people never work/go out (but that's a different story for a different thread) :)

I totally understand that. I've lived in apartment complexes in which the residents would just talk to each other and it was a community, and I've lived in others where it seemed like everybody there just wished that they didn't have neighbors. That second kind sucks because it seems like people would rather call the cops or somebody else instead of just walk over and talk to you.

On the flip side, sometimes people are just afraid to approach someone else that they don't know. Have you tried introducing yourself to them, striking up a conversation, and letting them know that you'll be happy to turn it down if they just ask? You could even give them your phone number so that they could call you instead of coming over. Honestly, I'm willing to put up with a lot more noise from a neighbor that I like compared to one that I don't.

I hate loud neighbors I lived below some guys (probably 8 of them in a 2 room apt) and one of them had some DJ equip. so they were always listening to loud music. Bass would rattle the windows and startle the cats. After asking on many occasions I just started calling the cops.

I love listening to loud music and movies to, but I have to be considerate of the neighbors and restrain myself. Maybe someday we’ll be neighbors and we’ll battle it out from across our yards. Be careful not to get the cops called on you to often as they’ll start charging you for the policeman’s time to go out and ask you to turn it down.

I live in a condo and my neighbor's kid bugs me, always running up and down the stairs and playing her clarinet. But I play my movies pretty loud, so I figure that makes us even.

Last season, I had the cops called on me while watching my beloved Chargers whoop up on my nemesis, the Raiders. I guess I was yelling at the TV kinda loud when I wanted Marty to throw the red flag on a catch that was OBVIOUSLY in bounds, but called out. Next thing I know, there's a knock on the door, and I'm thinking, "Who the hell would dare to bother me when I'm watching the Chargers?!?!?" The cops ask if they can talk to my wife. She wasn't even home!!! Apparently, someone thought I was beating her up or something!!

The Raiders are sort of "girlish" these days. I could see the confusion. :D ;)

But seriously folks...respect and be courteous to your neighbors. Get to know them and open communications. You might even find comrads to share your a/v hobby with.

This is just a generalization, of course....but sadly and quite evidently it seems that those are two attributes that young America is beginning to lack in abundance....Respect for others, and Communication skills.

(Hey, I'm old. I get a free pass on ranting. :))

I hate cop callers:mad:,to me its the mark of a sniveling human being that calls the cops instead of confronting a neighbor in person.

We have a neighbor that moved in & started whining about noise as soon as they moved in,your stereo is too loud & keeping my baby awake, your kids are playing football too loud & keeping my baby awake, your motorcycles are too loud & keeping my baby awake,i asked them if their inviso baby was narcoleptic.

They like to call the cops all the time & when the cops come i show them a written copy of our local noise ordinance & show them on a db meter that im within the law, then they split:D

I'm actually surprised no one has atleast complained to me about my system. I have blaired movies and music and know my neighbors can hear it but not once has anyone complained. I guess thats what I get for living around a bunch of pot heads, they just don't care. It's fine with me though, I get pretty cheap rent and to play my music loud.

Best thing is to talk to your neighbors and set up some kind of acceptable schedule... If they are unreasonable (i.e. never) then you can try to push it or simply save your money (for a house) while you use a buttkicker and less volume...

Fine, be reasonable and thoughtful. I prefer pushing the limits until they crack :p.

I finally realized why no one has complained about my sound system yesterday though. This thread got me thinking about it so I talked to my neighbors about it and they showed me their apartments, no one has a room they spend much time in near my living room so they don't really care if I turn it up. I just got really lucky with this converted houses layout.

Although I am tiring of the apartment/townhouse style of living, I consider myself lucky with the neighbors I currently have. Our apartment setup has one lower (me) and 2 uppers above us (them). I've heard music/movies from both of their areas and they've heard the same from mine. Not one single complaint nor an ounce of frustration from either of them towards me nor I towards them. I think we all realize there is a certain noise level to living, which we happen to all share.

I easily could have some stubborn, selfish, quiet-obsessed neighbor but luckily I don't.

There are "guidelines" I try to follow for general respect to those I live around. I don't cause any noise before 10am (no vacuuming or music blaring or too loud video game noise, etc), I also don't do anything loud after 10pm weeknights or midnight on Fri/Sat nights. If any of them said they needed it quieter because of their work schedule or whatever, I would oblige them with a smile.

I also leave em 6-packs of good beer on their doorstep for x-mas. I'm sure that helps too.

Apartment living?? Sheesh, I own a home and live in an area where the homes have above average spacing, and the sound still travels pretty well outside when listening at reference levels....LOL

I know neighbors can hear it when I'm playing movies loudly, but I've never had a complaint. If I do any reference level action movie watching, I just make sure to do it early in the evening. LFE content breezes through the walls like they're not even there!! At least with movie watching, it's only especially loud in segments..... unlike cranking music for 2 hours straight.

Talked to the neighbours (tried, anyway)

Hi all,

I gave the being outgoing thing a shot. Two sets of my neighbours say they can occasionally hear my music, but it's usually not too loud or overbearing. They were very nice, and I told them if i'm ever too loud to just come knock on the door or call.

The other one I spoke with did not understand me, as they are Indian immigrants, and speak very broken english. I asked if my music was too loud for them (even tried some bad handsignals), but they did not understand, and after about a minute of me trying to explain, they just closed the door in my face (very classy!). I imagine it was them who have been calling.

At least I've narrowed down who was calling, and i can try to limit my volume when I know they are home. I'll just have to keep saving for that house :)
