Iv been reading thru the articles and forum for the past few days and still cant figure my problem out. I am not getting any audio out of the speakers.

What I have:
TV = Sony KP-53V75
Cable Box = Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300
DVD Recorder = Samsung DVD-R145
Reciever = Sony STR-V444ES
Regular XBox

At the moment I dont have the DVD recoder hooked up trying to simplify my connections while trying to figure this out. I get video from both the cable box or the xbox depending on which source i have selected but dont get audio from either. I have went thru all manuels and tried just about everything I can find to try. Im pretty sure I have all the connections made correctly so I was thinking my problem lies in the settings on the reciever. Is that possible? Iv hooked up surround systems befor so as far as connecting componets and all that I have basic knowledge but as far as all the settings on this reciever and what to switch I have no clue.

Any help is appreciated. If there is any additional info you need to help me out just let me know.

thanks

Hi TexasMade and welcome to the forum.

What type of connection are you using for the xbox and the Cable box? If you are using HDMI or digital audio (optical or spdif) then you have to assign those connections on the receiver to those sources. Most AV receivers require you to tell the receiver that you are using the Optical Digital in 1 to a particual source like the XBox. So if you hooked your Xbox to the Game input then in the Setup menu you must assign Digital 1 to the game input.

I have everything hooked up thru RCA cables. No HDMI or digital cables.

I have the coax cable from the wall going into the cable box. Then RCA cables going out from the cable box to "TV/SAT" in on the back of the reciever. The Xbox is the older one so it only has RCA cables to hook up to the tv or reciever. I just looked on the back to the cable box and it has a coax digital audio "out" on the back but my reciever only has a an "IN" for digital audio but its the optical kind.

Hmm. I'm not sure why you are getting no sound when using the cable box if you have the receiver set to TV/SAT you should get some sound unless you speakers are not wired correctly.

I can say that the way you have your Xbox hooked up will not work. You need to hook it directly to the receiver and not try and pass it through the cable box. Also go into your settings for the cable box and make sure it is set up to output through the analog and that the digital coax is turned off.

i have the xbox hooked up to one of the video in's on the back of the reciever, not the cable box.

will check the audio settings on the cable box.

thanks for the ideas.

i looked at the audio settings on my cable box and it has " Audio Digital" in the main setting list. then when i select that option it allows me to toggle between "dolby digital" and "other". but when i select "other" it still shows "audio digital" on the main setting list. Maybe this is my issue?? the cable box is out putting digital audio and i only have the rca (analog) cables hooked up to the reciever....or am i way off?

im pretty sure its not a problem with the reciever or how i had the speakers hooked up because i hooked up another reciever i had and still had the same problem...it gets video but still no audio.

with my older reciever hooked up i did a test tone and got no sound from the speakers. reguardless of my audio settings on my cable box wouldnt i still get the test tone from the speakers if i had them hooked up correctly?

Hi. A couple of thing:

1. Do you get sound out of your receiver at all? Say, if you select the radio tuner? I'm wondering if it's related to what Jamie mentioned in that you either have your speakers off or have them muted.

2. Also, referring to page 24 of your receiver's owner's manual, make sure that the INPUT MODE for the two inputs that you are using ("TV/SAT" and the other video input) are set to either "AUTO" or "ANALOG".

This might also be due to the "AUDIO SPLIT" function on the receiver, but let's check out these two things first.

EDIT: I just saw your addition about the test tones. Yes, you should be able to hear those. What speakers are you using?

i have the reciever unplugged at the moment based on a link to another forum. says to unplug for about two hours to reset output transformers. But i think a few days ago when i selected the tuner i wasnt getting any sounds either....but i dont have an antenna hooked up to the reciever. Without the antenna hooked up wouldnt i at least hear static or something?

Im pretty sure i have selected "analog" or "auto" for both input modes. I have looked thru the manual but havent seen anything about turning the speakers on or off. they are not muted becuase i still get no sound wether the light on the mute button is on or off.

As far as speakers go I have brand new Sony SS-B1000 hooked up to for the rears, Klipsch KSF-10.5 for the fronts, and my TV has a connection to be used as the center speaker. I have no sub currently.

On the front of your receiver, there should be a dial on the lower left under the word "SPEAKERS". It's shown on page 26 of the manual and described on page 28. You would want that set to whichever set of speaker terminals you used for the front speakers, so either "A" or "B". The speaker terminals on the back of the receiver are labeled "A" and "B" as shown on page 15 of the manual.

Oh, i thought there was an option in some menu or something. Ya i have the speakers hooked up to "A" on the back of the reciever and that switch is set to "A" on the front of the reciever.

The other thing that I would recommend is to look at page 56 for the "Troubleshooting" comments on getting no sound. I think that you've done just about everything but check the AUDIO SPLIT options.

Now, I want to talk about something else. You wrote that you get no audio from your Sony receiver, but I think that you then wrote that you also got no audio (using test tones) from a different receiver. Is that the case? You've hooked up two different receivers to your speakers, and you've gotten no sound out of any of them?

Have you ever gotten sound from your speakers? If so, did you make any changes in your system just prior to not getting sound from them?

i will check the AUDIO SPLIT options when i power it back up.

You are correct, I get no audio from either reciever. When I get each one hooked up i get video but no audio. I have never had any of these speakers hooked up before now. The klipschs iv had for awhile but never hooked them up (got them free from work, they were used...same with the sony reciever). The sony speakers im useing as rears I just went and bought a few days ago from best buy so this is the first iv tried to hook them up.

At first I thought maybe the klipsch speakers, or the reciever was bad since i had gotten them used and never used or heard them functioning befor. But i ruled out the reciever being bad when hooked up my 2nd reciever and had the same problem. Still not sure about the klipsch speakers but I should at least be getting sound from my sonys being they are brand new.

thank you for all your help and suggestions up to this point.

EDIT:

with my older reciever hooked up i just tried turning on the tuner and i am getting static to the speakers i have hooked up.

Cool! At least you know that the speakers and/or wires aren't the problem. It was unlikely that they were the issue, but it was strange to me that you wouldn't hear the test tones.

Thanks for the update. Please let us know how it goes when you hook your Sony receiver back up. Thanks.

thank you guys for all yalls help and suggestions. Turns out my sony reciever is no good. I hooked up my old reciever and got all the settings correct and now get audio from the cable box or what ever input source i have selected. I dont know what i had set up wrong the first time I tried connecting the older reciever and got no audio but got it all worked out now.

I got the sony reciever for free and am on a limited budget for now. I dont know much about recievers but is the Sony str V444ES I have worth fixing or should I just look into purchasing a newer one?

thank you again.

I would just get a new one. That unit is not worth fixing IMO....
