Getting ARC to work between TV and Receiver

I noticed quite a few threads online where numerous people were having issues getting ARC to work. I struggled a bit to get this to work. Options are a bit different on different receiver manufacturers and TV's. So though I'd create a thread for those who might face the same issue.

Here is how to get ARC to work with Sony TV (55W800D) and Marantz Receiver (SR7005). The following steps should get you going in the right direction if you have other models/manufacturers.

Prequisites:

  • Receiver and TV should support HDMI Control and ARC.
  • HDMI cable should be one that supports High Speed, ARC, ver1.4. (With Sony TV non High Speed did not work).
Sony TV:
  • Change Speaker Output in the TV, from TV speakers to External Speakers.
  • Enable HDMI Control (I don't think I modified this. Lost track of what I did with the TV. But on some TV's this might need to be enabled).
Marantz Receiver:
  • On Marantz with ARC, the receiver's Source Input will be TV. If TV source is disabled, enable it in the receiver.
  • With HDMI Control, Receiver gets switched on by the TV. So when TV switches on, so does the receiver. This is a test for HDMI control. If this fails, HDMI Control is probably not supported or not working. Check options on TV & Receiver.
  • HDMI Control - Volume on the receiver can be controlled via receiver or TV.
  • Receiver will automatically switch to the respective source, so you don't have to manually select source on the receiver.
