Hi yall.
my first post on audioholics.
my question is that I have a center ch. that is 15-120 watt's.
Will when i play a dvd movie and when they are talking the audio is kinda low,
my system is calibrated and the speakers volume is balance for the L R C LS RS speakers. Now on some movies the diallog is louder then other movies.
what may cause this to happen? I'm useing monster audio cables and useing fiber optic thx optical cable.{dd}digital. is there a way to boost the audio on the center Ch.?

thanks. in advance

It's fairly typical for the level of dialog to vary from movie to movie. The standard is supposed to be -31 dB and again the mastering engineer is supposed to include a DialNorm value in the bitstream that indicates the actual level of the dialog so that the receiver can boost or attenuate it to bring it to -31 dB. The problem is that not all receivers look at the DialNorm value (THX certified receivers do) and even when they do the DialNorm value may not be accurate.

- You can always bump up the center channel level to suit your tastes rather than leave it at the 'correct' calibrated value.
- Muddy or low dialog is often caused by center channel placement or room acoustics problems. You can experiment with placement of the center or better yet read up on this site about room treatment.
- You can use dynamic range compression (aka 'midnight mode' on some receivers) to compress the dynamic range. The explosions will be less loud because the range between soft and loud will be compressed, but dialog intelligibility is often improved.
- You could try using PLII Music mode which allows you to adjust Center Width (how center info is spread between L/R/C) and Dimension (move the center image forward or backward).

OR you could keep the remote in your hand at all times and fiddle with the volume like the rest of us do. :)

Besides the posts above, you want to make sure that you have level matched all your channels with a test disc and spl meter. That may be a cause as well.

The problem I was having with my center was fixed when I angled it towards me. I have it under my TV and was previously pointed towards my feet I angled it up a little with some coasters and now the dialog is much clearer and cleaner. I now have a totally different problem. Now that the speaker is calibrated the way it's supposed to be I'm not liking the brightness. I have two 522 Aperion speakers for my fronts and a 422 for my center. The 422 is almost ear piercing at refrence levels. Oh well time to upgrade, good thing Aperion gave me a 12 month upgrade option on all speakers.
