I am going to get the PS3 80gb later today and would like to purchase 1 or 2 BD DVDs to try out the latest decoding. Any suggestions? Thanks.

For 7.1 try 3:10 to Yuma and Pan's Labrynth. For 5.1, Crimson Tide, The Rock, Blackhawk Down, the 300, Underworld (both), and the Pirates of the Caribbean (all). I have these movies and the sound is great on all of them.

You can read BD disc reviews at Highdefdigest.com. Here's a link to BD's sorted by Audio. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews_audio.html

I don't think all of the movies you suggested had the DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD audio. Maybe I did not make myself clear. I have owned a Sony S300 since last December and sold it to my friend for last week so I can get the PS3. Therefore, I am used to BD DTS 5.1 or other "regular" encoding. I am actually looking for movies that have DTS-MA or Dolby-TrueHD encoding specifically

Anyway, I bought PS3/80gb tonight and set it up without a glitch. I also updated the firmware from 1.70 to 2.30 through my wireless network. I have played some multichannel SACD and it worked beautifully. However, the volume is not as high as my other SACD player (Denon 3930 CI) with the same reference volume level on my receiver. Later I found out that I can increase the volume on PS3 (do any of you increase that to the maximum)? I also bought Juno, which has DTS-MA encoding. Call it luck, I just pop in the CD without changing anything and later confirmed onscreen that the PS3 is feeding PCM DTSMA to my receiver. I am very glad with the purchase.

One question to PS3 owners ... does any of you stack your PS3 on/beneath other AV equipment (right now, mine is sitting on top of my Denon 3930)? I know that the unit can be hot but I don't expect it to be that hot. Potential hazard?

I'll have to poke around and see which of those movies have either True HD or DTS HD MA. All the movies I listed have one of those two or uncompressed PCM, which still sounds amazing.

For True HD try Letters from Iwo Jima and The 300. Off the top of my head, Pans Labrynth and Speed both have DTS MA. I enjoyed the audio track on both. I believe Flight of the Phoenix has DTS MA, but i'm not sure. The crash scene, will give your subwoofer a hefty workout. The movie itself was kinda slow and weak.

PS3's get hot so make sure you leave plenty of room on the right side of it where hot air escapes. You will know when it gets too hot as it has 3 fan levels. If it is out in the open and by itself the fan will stay on low. If it ever hits level 3 it sounds like a helicopter and may be louder than the misic you are listening too. Mine has a space dedicated to it in the rack.

Are you into music at all?

There's the "Nine Inch Nails: Beside You in Time" disc.

Opus Arte just released "Die Zauberflöte" on Blu-Ray--oops that's PCM.

Additional question:
Why is "Pure Direct" mode much louder than the other regular output modes?
