General question on Sony DAV-FX100W

This is Sony's 'Dream System', consisting of their wireless 5.1 speaker set, and an integrated DVD/receiver unit.

My question is, if the integrated unit were to fail, can it be swapped out for a more general purpose receiver (and separate DVD) without causing the loss of the wireless IR speakers?

My wife insists on the asthetics of the speakers, I'm not happy with the all-in-one unit but for that price I'd be prepared to buy the set and replace it with a better and more versatile combo. However if the rear (wireless) speakers don't work after that, then it's a no go for me.

Thx!

I'm sure the IR is somehow specific to the unit, meaning the IR sender can't just be plugged into another receiver, so I don't think it would work without the main unit.

I wouldn't go with that "Dream System". It doesn't sound that great, to me at least. That's not to mention the fact that I despise Sony and their instance on using proprietory technology means that you probably will not be able to upgrade.

There are plenty of good speaker packages in your price range that will sound much better than the Sony system and with a standard receiver, you will have a much more upgradable system.

I agree with Hi Ho, but, it's cheap, and for the bedroom/retreat where the sound is not critical, not the main HT. I thought that if the front speakers somehow managed the IR Tx to the back, then if the DVD/receiver failed/was swapped out, they would still function. Otherwise I am not going to waste money on this. Maybe I just should forget it.

How about an HSU Ventriloquist VT-12 speaker set along with an HSU or SVS sub and a Yamaha HTR-5860 receiver? That would sound better and be more upgradable than the Sony system along with being asthetically pleasing (personal preference).
