With out a doubt Satriani.

And that takes nothing away from Hoey. I like him and find him a lot of fun but I don't think his published music gets as as deep emotionaly as Satriani's does.

Hoey's Monster Surf CD is pretty darn cool.

I remember listening to both of them when one of my much older friends told me check them out. I think I was probably 17, and I was really into jazz at the time, but I figured why not.

Whoa dude. I didn't know you could do that with a guitar. Frickin' awesome. I bought the Gary Hoey CD with the monkeys sitting around in the forest on the cover, and then a couple of Satriani records too. I still have the Live CD with Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai.

I like Satriani the best out of all of them. They all sound different to me, and I just like the way Satriani shreds.

Good call! And you've just named (IMHO) the four finest rock guitarists living on the planet today. There are other fabulous and soulful git guys, but in the rock genre, it can't get any better. :) That kind of talent could make a guy really jealous.

You pretty much have to be a guitar player to appreciate the subtleties in their playing. I've never heard Gary Hoey, but Vai and Satriani have completely different styles of shreading. Joe is more Old school Rock, whereas Vai likes to experiment with the sound.

I agree - Vai really gets weird sometimes, too weird for me, and far weirder than even recent Jeff Beck stuff :D. I prefer Jeff's older stuff and most of Joe's because it is straightforward rock while at the same time being extremely intricate, technical guitar work. Regardless, I think it takes some extra creativity to do what they do with no lead singer to mix it up.

Does this Gary Hoey do anything besides Christmas stuff? I have never heard of him either, and I must say that I dislike Christmas/seasonal music...

Satriani for me without question, but Hoey is OK.

I think Vai is the most technically impressive guitarist on the planet, but my ear loves great melody and that's why Satch is the man.

Tunes like The Forgotten Part II, Time Machine, Always With Me, etc., showcase the dudes ear for being able to shred like there's no tomorrow while keeping a firm grasp on a beautiful melody.

The closest Vai comes to the style of shredding I love is "For The Love Of God" which is of course a masterpiece and has insanely brilliant shredding.

Most shredders sound too similar to me also but there are a hand full that have a distinguishable sound. Satriani is stunningly talented to me because he is soulful. He plays fast/medium/slow and it's not all about how many notes are being played, but he can play a ton of notes real fast if the song calls for it!:)

listen and enjoy (one of my favs):
