I'm soon to buy either a Panasonic G10 or S1. Most likely 46 inches, but maybe 42.

Amazon is selling the 46 inch G10 for 1150. Newegg has the 46 inch S1 for 975. Other than the G10 having THX, what else am I getting for another $175 ? Newegg has the Z80U for $1200, but that's at the upper range of my price limit and again, I'm not sure what benefits I'd be getting.

The room is fairly bright during the day, but hardly anyone watches TV in the daytime, so that's not much of an issue.

Thanks much!

If not doing a pro calibration, the G10 will look better. If doing a pro calibration, the S1 will look better.

YMMV, but here is a well written 7 page PDF on tweaking the SM offsets.

I first posted that here, and read it for my thoughts on how YMMV.

The THX mode, according to some, will get you the best colors. However, if you get a pro cal, it should look great too. It seems that this is almost as much of a matter of opinion at this point. Some do think THX is a bit too dim. I do not know if the G10 has gamma control, like the V10, but the S1 does not, however, it is said that the default gamma settings are pretty good already.

I will perhaps research more on your behalf when time permits.

if you dont pro calibrate the G10 will give you a better PQ out of the box...

you need to explain to me...if a G10 as a better PQ then a S1 out of the box...how can the S1 look better or identical then the G10 after pro cal on both of them??...logics tells me that if you pro cal both of them the G10 will still look better!.

With THX mode found on the G10 most people would be less inclined to do a pro calibration. Why pay extra for the THX mode if you'll by-pass it with pro setting anyways? Having carefully looked at all 3(g10,v10 and s1)there was very little to discern IMO with HD content.

I was told this straight from a Panasonic Rep.

The S1, G10 and V10 models all have the exact same panels in them. The differences are in the video processing (G10/V10 have THX mode, S1 does not). If you choose to have the TV calibrated and bypass the THX mode, they will all look practically identical. If you choose not to have them calibrated, the G10 and V10 will look better when watching the THX mode.

Other than that the differences are things like, more inputs, Vierra Link, netflix, stuff like that.

G10 46 ordered

I just ordered the Panasonic TC P46 G10 from Amazon for $1088. Newegg has the same price, then BuyDig for two dollars more.

BTW, in my price research I noticed a couple of sneaky pricings. Buy.com listed their 50 inch G10 for 1130, BUT unlike most of the other flat screen TVs, this one doesn't include free shipping, which brings the price up to 1260. So - caveat emptor !

Best Buy just today is offering an S 1 50 inch for 898 which is a super deal but I wanted THX and I would have to pay good old Illinois sales tax, which brings the price close to 1000 anyway.

Thanks to one and all for your advice, both in this thread and the other TV Display threads. I continue to be amazed at all the info one can gather here on Audioholics and I wonder why anyone would buy any electronic video or audio gear without consulting this community!

Nice .
I got the 54S1 for 1100.00 Couldn't pass it up. I would have loved the g10, but it was 1600.00 for the 54... I couldn't pay 500 for the difference. That money is going to my center channel.
