I know its impossible to future proof, but I want to come close as much as possible. Once the major shifts for video and audio come I have the feeling we should be ok for at least a while. I am hoping to make a major upgrade to attain the following and was wondering when you think it may all be available.

1.A receiver or Pre Amp which will process the new HD surround sound coming on the format of HD dvds.

2. a DVD player which will play the new Blue Ray or HD DVD surround hi res music format, and be backward compatible for DVD A and SACD.

3. a 42 or 50 inch plasma which has a Native resolution of 1080p and can accept that native resolution via the HDMI input in order to bypass the internal scaler.

4. An external video processor which will accept 1080i via HDMI and de-interlace.

5. All of the above with the "improvements of HDMI" i.e. connection

6. all of the above made not only by mainstream brands like Denon, but slower brands to catch on to changes like Rotel.

I know some of this is already available, but when do you think all of that will be attainable?

1. Initially, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players will use analog outputs and internal decoding to send HD audio to the receiver. In 1-2 years, mass market receivers will start to include the decoding DSP modes.

2. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be out this year, and they will probably replace SACD and DVD-Audio.

3. The real 1080P sets should be out this year. Several were shown at CES.

4. These scallers are out now. Some of the DVDO products will scale to 1080p, but if there are no displays that can accept the signal, what is the point.

5. HDMI 1.3 should support the HD audio signals. Changes to the HDCP copy protection will be required to allow 1080p video. Should be about a year.

6. 1-2 years after the HDMI standard is mature and actually works with most receivers, displays, and set top boxes, then the botique manufacturers will probably start to incorporate these features. By this time, the additional electronics will be significantly less expensive.

Based on the number of posts on the forum with HDMI issures between the cable box, receiver, and display, switching to all HDMI this year might be a mistake. Component video will provide comparable video quality for 1080i and 720p signals.
