FWIW while in college a friend and I experienced the scam first hand. We were offered an outstanding deal on a pair of PA-type speakers. IIRC he wanted $300 each (said they were $1000 each retail) to recoup his losses on a broken contract with a client (client was said to be at fault). And what was he driving? You guessed it, a white van. I'm glad neither of us had $600 to spare that day
